New, as of the year 2000, is a Young Woman of Distinction Award. We have established this special award so that the contributions of young women (ages 16-24) may also be recognized and hounoured.

Nominations are being sought to recognize women from Brandon and the commuities of Westman and the Parkland for their work in fields such as, but not limited to: Agriculture, Arts, Education, Business, Public and Community Service, and Health, Sports and Recreation.

The YWCA of Brandon is pleased to announce the nominees for the 14th Women of Distinction Dinner and Awards to be held in Brandon on March 8, 2001 in the UCT Pavilion at the Keystone Centre. Guest MC, Courtesy of WTN and Westman Communications Group, will be Bohdana Bashuk, a host and radio journalist for the Ukranian-English Program on CKJF in Winnipeg. Ms. Bashuk also hosts "Open for Discussion" on Monday nights on WTN. That evening six individual awards and one Young Woman of Distinction Award will be presented. The Women of Distinction Awards recognize the achievements and contributions of women in the Brandon, Westman, and Parkland regions. This year, fifteeen women and three young women have been honoured by their peers will a nomination as a Woman of Distinction. The fifteen women and three young women are:

The YWCA of Brandon is a non-profit organization which has been providing social services to our communities for 93 years. Proceeds from this dinner help us to operate the YWCA Transitional Residence, and the YWCA Westman Women's Shelter. Your support is greatly appreciated.

Nomination


CRITERIA

In making a nomination, nominators are not required to designate a category or field in which the nomination is being made. The selection of Awards of Distinction are not made according to category, with the exception of a woman being nominated for the Young Woman of Distinction Award. Nominators should focus on demonstrating as fully as possible (with detailed information and examples) their nominees' individual achievements, contributions to the well-being of the community and contributions as role models for other women and girls. The Selection Committee will make their decision based only on the information provided by the nominators in the nomination package. Six Women of Distinction Awards and one Young Woman of Distinction Award will be presented.

"Individual achievements" are any achievements which have been or are:

  • outstanding performance in her field;
  • breaking new ground or old barriers; and/or
  • making a distinct and describable difference.

"Contributions to the well-being of the communities: are any contributions, which:

  • enhance the lives of people in her community (whether defined geogrpahically or other wise) in any of several ways such as socially, economically, or culturally.
  • have been or are agents for change either within their particular community or the world at large;

"Contributions as role models for other women and girls" are any activities or achievements which include:

  • educating, supporting and encouraging female successors and colleagues;
  • encouraging women to follow in particular career paths or helping to achieve greater autonomy for women in traditional careers;
  • encouraging women to follow non-traditional careers.

ELIGIBILITY
Nominees must:

  1. be at least 18 years of age unless nominated for the Young Woman of Distinction Award (Ages 16-24)
  2. have been a resident of the Brandon, Westman or Parkland areas for the past year.
  3. consent to their nomination.
  4. not be a previous winner, although she may be a previous nominee.

SELECTION COMMITTEE

The Selection Committee is an independent group, consisting of citizens from the Westman area who are chosen to represent a variety of interests, experience, commuity involvement and age. These individuals will be identified at the dinner.
