Shay-Lee joined the MADRG as a Research Assistant and undergraduate thesis student in April 2004. She completed her Bachelors of Science (Honours) in Psychology from the

University of Manitoba in April 2005. Shay-Lee completed her Master of Sciences in the Department of Community Health Sciences in August 2008 also at the University of Manitoba. Her thesis work focused on a comparison of suicidal behavior in an American Indian on-reserve population and a US general population sample, illustrating the differences in prevalence and risk factors for suicidal behaviors between these two populations.

Shay-Lee's research interests lie in the areas of mental health, psychiatric epidemiology, suicidal behaviours, traumatic life events, at-risk populations, military mental health, and Aboriginal populations. In October 2007, Shay-Lee was awarded a CIHR Brain Star Award for her recent publication on traumatic events and suicidal behaviours.

Shay-Lee was supported by a Canadian Institutes for Health Research Canada Graduate Scholarship-Masters Award, a Manitoba Health Research Council studentship, and the Western Regional Training Centre studentship during her Masters program of research. She is currently supported by a Canadian Institutes for Health Research Charles Banting and Fredrick Best Doctoral Research Award to complete her PhD in the Department of Community Health Sciences under the supervision of Dr. Jitender Sareen and Dr. Brenda Elias. Her dissertation work will be to conduct and evaluate a randomized controlled trial of a suicide prevention intervention training program in undergraduate medical school students.
