Former music teachers in the River East School Division and the family of Gertrude Lowery donated the Gertrude Lowery Memorial Trophy to the Winnipeg Music Festival in 2001. This trophy is given for the most outstanding performance by a School Chorus, Grades 5 to 8.
In her position as a music teacher in the East Kildonan School District and as Supervisor of Music in the River East School Division, Miss Lowery positively influenced the musical growth of thousands of children for over 40 years. She was well known for the "Sunday School of the Air" and "Tuneful Tales" broadcasts on CBC radio. Gertrude was a true friend, a marvellous family member, an enlightened musician, a wonderful role model, and a leader of people.
