The students and staff of Bertrun E. Glavin School and the River East School Division donated the Helen Derksen Memorial Shield to the Winnipeg Music Festival in 1988. This shield is awarded for the most outstanding performance of a Sacred Selection by a School Chorus, Kindergarten to Grade 6.
Helen Derksen taught school in the elementary grades in East Kildonan and specialized in music studies. She entered a choir in the Winnipeg Music Festival every year and had a deep love of classical and sacred music.
