Before I entered grade 3, I was a normal sighted child who hung out with friends, was more active, and enjoyed reading mystery books while lying down. But shortly in that year (2003-2004) my lifestyle had started to change. One day I opened the mystery book that I was currently reading at the time and found that the print had extremely shrunk. From the information slowly gathered from that point on, my family and I flew to Ottawa, ON, CA for some eye tests that couldn’t be preformed here in Winnipeg. For the rest of that year, I wore glasses, but however, in grade 4, (2004-2005) I found that glasses did not help me anymore. From that point I required special software and equipment that allowed me to see my school work. As the years pass, I'm slowly noticing a slight drop of vision. I am now in grade 11 and now know how to read and produce Braille, to use a mobility cane when I walk outside, and have learnt to be an independent student/person. It’s because of my short childhood that I have learnt so much more than what I would have. If I hadn’t occurred such a problem, I would have lived my life differently, such as joining a sports team, continued to hang out with friends who would be at the same level as me, etc. I consider myself very bright for my age and have been told by adults that I produce such deep thoughts/questions, that a normal teenager would not do so. I have lived a short childhood and have been taught from an early age to be responsible, that has made me be and think as maturely as I am.
