VOLUNTEER
Westman Hospice Association could not operate without its greatest resource, our volunteers.
We have two Volunteer Outreach Services:
Companion Volunteers provide compassionate care, which is directed towards enhancing the quality of life for terminally ill persons, as well as providing support for the caregivers. Services provided by hospice volunteers include compassionate visiting, practical supports with activities of daily living, respite services to provide relief for caregivers and bereavement support.
Companion Volunteers are required to take a volunteer education program, Friend in Hand, offered by Westman Hospice in partnership with Hospice and Palliative Care Manitoba. This program runs for eight weeks (one night a week) and is offered in both the spring and fall. As a volunteer, you will receive on going support and additional educational opportunities within the organization and community.
The second Outreach Service provided involves Member Volunteers who support the association by helping out with information displays, raising community awareness, public relations, newsletter, special events, fund raising, etc. Information on becoming a member is included in the brochure.
Please call if you have any questions or would like to arrange a time to discuss how you can become involved with Westman Hospice.
Strolling with Satisfaction
- Do your daily chores include walking the dog every day? If you’re in Brandon this summer and are looking to make your early morning or late night stroll a little more meaningful, consider helping Westman Hospice.
- Westman Hospice assists individuals with a terminal illness to continue living a full life while providing practical and emotional support to families throughout the process. Their annual “Mail Drop” is a fundraising event that raises necessary funds.
- Volunteers are assigned an area in their community, and walk door-to-door dropping off envelopes. No canvassing is required, so this is a great opportunity to bring along a friend or give your dog the chance to get his daily exercise.
- For those who are shy or introverted, you can be rest assured that there is no need to communicate or outwardly promote the cause. You can quietly go about your walk feeling satisfied knowing that you are making a difference.
- However, if you love to chat and are social, keep in mind that you may meet friends and neighbours along the way. This is the perfect time to try your hand at sales and marketing skills by telling them why you chose to help out Westman Hospice and the benefits of its presence in your community.
- Add some feel-good to your stroll, and help out Westman Hospice.
