Testament written by Matthew, Mark, Luke and John Angels are mentioned many times in the Holy Books of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, who relate the gospel of Jesus of Nazareth. The following are a few pertinent Biblical entries. |
| In Matthew 1, we read of the announcement to Joseph, husband of Mary, of the birth of Jesus of Nazareth. |
![]() |
The
birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused
to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy
Ghost.
Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a public example, was minded to put her away privily. But while he thought on these things, behold, the ANGEL of the LORD appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost. |
| And
she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he
shall save his people from their sins.
Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us. Then Joseph being raised from sleep did as the ANGEL of the Lord had bidden him, and took unto him his wife: And knew her not till she had brought forth her firstborn son: and he called his name JESUS." |
| In Matthew 2, we read of the departure of Joseph, Mary and the Child Jesus into Egypt and of their return to the land of Israel. |
| "Now
when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king,
behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem, Saying, Where is
he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east,
and are come to worship him. ........"
"When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy. And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense and myrrh. And being warned of God in a dream that they should not return to Herod, they departed into their own country another way. And when they were departed, behold, the ANGEL of the Lord appeareth to Joseph in a dream, saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and be thou there until I bring thee word: for Herod will seek the young child to destroy him......" |
| "But
when Herod was dead, behold, an ANGEL of the Lord appeareth in a dream
to Joseph in Egypt,
Saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and go into the land of Israel: for they are dead which sought the young child's life. And he arose, and took the young child and his mother, and came into the land of Israel." |

| In Matthew 4, we read of the temptation of Jesus in the wilderness. |
| "Then
was Jesus led up of the spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the
devil. And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was
afterward an hungered. And when the tempter came to him, he said,
If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread.
But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God. Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple, And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his ANGELS charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone. |

Jesus
said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.
Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them; And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me. Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve. Then the devil leaveth him, and, behold, ANGELS came and ministered unto him." |
| In Matthew 13, we read of the parable of the Sower of the fields. |
| "Then
Jesus sent the multitude away, and went into the house: and his disciples
came unto him, saying, Declare unto us the parable of the tares (an undesirable
weed) of the field. He answered and said unto them, He that soweth
the good seed is the Son of man;
The field is the world; the good seed are the children of the kingdom; but the tares are the children of the wicked one; The enemy that sowed them is the devil; the harvest is the end of the world; and the reapers are the ANGELS. As therefore the tares are gathered and burned in the fire; so shall it be in the end of this world. The Son of man shall send forth his ANGELS, and they shall gather out of his kingdom all things that offend, and them which do iniquity; And shall cast them into a furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth. Then shall the righteous shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Who hath ears to hear, let him hear." |
|
|
"For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his ANGELS; and then he shall reward every man according to his works." |
|
|
"Take heed that ye despise not one of these little ones; for I say unto you, That in heaven their ANGELS do always behold the face of my Father which is in heaven." |
| In Matthew 22, we read of Jesus at the Marriage Dinner. |
| "The
same day came to him the Sadducees, which say that there is no resurrection,
and asked him, Saying, Master, Moses said, If a man die, having no children,
his brother shall marry his wife, and raise up seed unto his brother.
Now there were with us seven brethren: and the first, when he had married a wife, deceased, and, having no issue, left his wife unto his brother: Likewise the second also, and the third, unto the seventh. And last of all the woman died also. Therefore in the resurrection whose wife shall she be of the seven? For they all had her. Jesus answered and said unto them, Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God. For in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are as the ANGELS of God in heaven." |
| In Matthew 24, we read of the signs of the end of the Age. |
| "And
then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall
all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming
in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.
And he shall send his ANGELS with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other." |
| In Matthew 28, we read of the resurrection of Jesus. |
| "In
the end of the sabbath, as it began dawn toward the first day of the week,
came Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to see the sepulchre.
And, behold, there was a great earthquake: for the ANGEL of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat upon it. |
| His
countenance was like lightning, and his raiment white as snow:
And for fear of him the keepers did shake, and became as dead men. |

| And
the ANGEL answered and said unto the women, Fear not ye: for I know that
ye seek Jesus, which was crucified.
He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay. And go quickly, and tell his disciples that he is risen from the dead; and, behold, he goeth before you into Galilee; there shall ye see him: lo, I have told you." |
|
|
"And
there came a voice from heaven, saying, Thou art my beloved Son, in whom
I am well pleased.
And immediately the spirit driveth him into the wilderness. And he was there in the wilderness forty days, tempted of Satan; and was with the wild beasts; and the ANGELS ministered unto him." |
|
|
For
what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose
his own soul?
Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul? Whosoever therefore shall be ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation; of him also shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he cometh in the glory of his Father with the holy ANGELS." |
| In Mark 13, we read of signs of the end of this Age. |

"But
take ye heed: behold, I have foretold you all things.
But in those days, after that tribulation, the sun shall be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, |
| And
the stars of heaven shall fall, and the powers that are in heaven shall
be shaken.
And then shall they see the Son of man coming in the clouds with great power and glory. And then shall he send his ANGELS, and shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from the uttermost part of the earth to the uttermost part of heaven. Now learn a parable of the fig tree; When her branch is yet tender, and putteth forth leaves, ye know that summer is near: So ye in like manner, when ye shall see these things come to pass, know that it is nigh, even at the doors. Verily I say unto you, that this generation shall not pass, till all these things be done. Heaven and earth shall pass away: but my words shall not pass away. But of that day and that hour knoweth no man, no, not the ANGELS which are in heaven, neither the Son, but the Father. Take ye heed, watch and pray: for ye know not when the time is." |
| In Luke 1, we read of the foretelling of the birth of John. An angel appeared before Zacharias. |
| "According
to the custom of the priest's office, his lot was to burn incense when
he went into the temple of the Lord.
And the whole multitude of the people were praying without at the time of incense. And there appeared unto him an ANGEL of the Lord standing on the right side of the altar of incense. And when Zacharias saw him, he was troubled, and fear fell upon him. But the ANGEL said unto him, Fear not, Zacharias: for thy prayer is heard; and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John." |

We
also read of the foretelling of the birth of Jesus.
"And in the sixth month the ANGEL Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth, To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary. |
| And
the ANGEL came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured,
the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women.
And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be. And the ANGEL said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God. And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS." |
|
|
"And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn. |
| And
there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping
watch over their flock by night.
And, lo, the ANGEL of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. |

| And
the ANGEL said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings
of great joy, which shall be to all people.
For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord." "And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. And suddenly there was with the ANGEL a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men. ......" "And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told unto them. And when eight days were accomplished for the circumcising of the child, his name was called JESUS, which was so named of the ANGEL before he was conceived in the womb." |
| In Luke 9, Jesus said to the Disciples (depicted below) |

"For
whosoever shall be ashamed of me and of my words, of him shall the Son
of man be ashamed, when he shall come in his own glory, and in his Father's,
and of the holy ANGELS.
But I tell you of a truth, there be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the kingdom of God." |
|
|
"Also
I say unto you, Whosoever shall confess me before men, him shall the Son
of man also confess before the ANGELS of God.
But he that denieth me before men shall be denied before the ANGELS of God." |
|
|
"Likewise, I say unto you, there is joy in the presence of the ANGELS of God over one sinner that repenteth." |
| In Luke 20, we read |
| "And
Jesus answering said unto them, The children of this world marry, and are
given in marriage:
But they which shall be accounted worthy to obtain that world, and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry, nor are given in marriage: Neither can they die any more: for they are equal unto the ANGELS; and are the children of God, being the children of the resurrection. Now that the dead
are raised, even Moses shewed at the bush, when he calleth the Lord, the
For he is not a God of the dead, but of the living: for all live unto him." |
| In Luke 22, we read |
|
"And he came out, and went, as he was wont, to the mount of Olives; and his disciples also followed him. And when he was at the place, he said unto them, Pray that ye enter not into temptation. And he was withdrawn from them about a stone's cast, and kneeled down, and prayed, Saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done. And there appeared an ANGEL unto him from heaven, strengthening him. And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly: and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground. And when he rose up from prayer, and was come to his disciples, he found them sleeping for sorrow, And said unto them, Why sleep ye? rise and pray, lest ye enter into temptation. |
| In John 1, Jesus said to the Disciples |
| "And he saith unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Hereafter ye shall see heaven open, and the ANGELS of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man." |
| In John 5, we read of the healing Pool of Bethesda. |
![]() |
"After
this there was a feast of the Jews; and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.
Now there is at Jerusalem by the sheep market a pool, which is called in the Hebrew tongue Bethesda, having five porches. In these lay a great multitude of impotent folk, of blind, halt, withered, waiting for the moving of the water. |
| For an ANGEL went down at a certain season into the pool, and troubled the water: whosoever then first after the troubling of the water stepped in was made whole of whatsoever disease he had." |
| In John 12, we read |
| "Father,
glorify thy name. Then came there a voice from heaven, saying, I have both
glorified it, and will glorify it again.
The people therefore, that stood by, and heard it, said that it thundered: others said, An ANGEL spake to him. Jesus answered and said, This voice came not because of me, but for your sakes. Now is the judgment of this world: now shall the prince of this world be cast out. And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me." |
| In John 20, we read of Mary at the empty sepulchre of Jesus. |
| "But Mary stood without at the sepulchre weeping: and as she wept, she stooped down, and looked into the sepulchre, |

And
seeth two ANGELS in white sitting, the one at the head, and the other at
the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain.
And they say unto her, Woman, why weepest thou? She saith unto them, Because they have taken away my LORD, and I know not where they have laid him." |
