Black Monday

For the second time in the history of the parish, the residents of St. Boniface would lose their beloved cathedral to fire. On that hot afternoon of July 22nd, 1968, sirens were heard across the city as firetrucks and police cars rushed to the scene in a futile attempt to save the building and its contents.
As people gathered, bystanders sensed the end and started to save whatever they could. By mid-afternoon, only the façade and outer walls were left, and within these, a new cathedral would rise in a few years.
