Born and raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada I began my stage management career at St. Paul's High School by working backstage on my grade 12 production. From there, I went on to West Kildonan Collegiate. It was a teacher named Kayla Gordon (now Artistic Director of the Wpg Jewish Theatre) who sent me on various workshops and brought in theatre friends to teach me the basics of stage management. Kayla also introduced me to the arts community through the brand new company of the Winnipeg Jewish Theatre. It was there that I received my first two apprentice credits. In the summer of 1990, Jack Timlock hired me to be an apprentice at the renouned open air theatre Rainbow Stage. I worked on 3 productions over those 2 months, training under Judie Brokenshire, Chris Pierce and Ann Hodges.
Over the next 3 seasons (6 productions) I was fortunate enought to work with Janet Remy, Russell Bragg and Ben Chekuta. During the 1992-93 season I left Wpg to attend Ryerson Polytechnical Institute to study Theatre Technical Production.
In 1993 I was a proud part of the revival of the bankrupt Rainbow Stage. Our first production under the new management was a smash hit version of "Fiddler on the Roof" It was also my first show as an Equity member. I had been promoted to the Assistant Stage Manager working with Russell Martin. At the home of the worlds longest running outdoor theatre I have had the privilege to work with directors like: Alan Lund, Richard Ozounian, Kelly Robinson, Susan Cox, Tibor Fereghyhazi, Brian Foley, Robb Paterson & Richard Hurst.
Following the 1993 summer production I was lucky enough to break into the word of Opera. During Manitoba Opera's 1993-94 season I was the assistant Stage Manager for Tosca. The very patient Andre Prevost gets all the credit I can give him for my love and enjoyment of working in opera. Since that first opera I went on to do a total of 28 operas all over Canada. Opera Lyra Ottawa, Opera Saskatchewan, Calgary Opera & Edmonton Opera have all employed my services.
It was Opera Saskatchewan who gave me the chance to call a full opera -Romeo et Juliette, directed by Dr. Irving Guttman c.m. - a man credited with founding all opera companies west of Ontario.
But Opera Sask did not give me my very first chance to sit in the big chair. No that privilege was given by the WJT. In their 1994 season I was the SM for "The Cemetery Club" starring Nancy Drake, Doreen Brownstone & Cliff Gardner. It was by no means a textbook way to run a show, but it provided a stable base for what turned out to be a successful career (to date at least) in stage management.
After 3 more years of ASM at Rainbow Stage I was again promoted, this time to Stage Manager, In 1996 I Stage Managed "The Sound of Music" for director Brian Foley. I was their SM for the past 8 seasons - finishing a 14 year partnership with them this summer (2003) by calling a favourite of mine: "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat".
Over the years I have worked with the Manitoba Theatre Centre - calling a production of "Closer" at the Warehouse, numerous operas with the Manitoba Opera - both as the SM and ASM. I travelled to Toronto to work on a Canadian edition of the Broadway Show "You're a Good Man Charlie Brown".
Other highlights include:
- Working at the Historic Pantages Theatre - SM on "Fame" for Rainbow Stage
- Travelling with the WJT to Montreal to do "Last Night of Ballyhoo"
- Working as a set PA on the National Aboriginal Awards for CBC TV
- Calling a brand new version of "Carmen" for the Manitoba Opera
- Being the sole stage manager for the Royal Winnipeg Ballet
- A 5 month engagement with Manitoba Theatre Centre, Theatre Calgary and The Citadel in Edmonton as Stage Manager for a massive Guys and Dolls musical.
*Travelling to the far east - China and Korea
At the RWB I had the pleasure to tour most of Canada, travelling coast to coast a few times. We also travelled to Bejing, Shanghai and Guangzhou to perform.
Since leaving the RWB I have toured extensively through Canada, travelling in a bus and truck tours throughout Ontario and points west. We even travelled thought the Rockies a few times.
with KOBA Family Entretainement I returned to the far east, spending a solid month in Seoul Korea performing a live action Caillou production. A truly wonderful place to spend a summer.
Over the years I have worked on smaller scale projects (workshops to 2 or three handers) to the massive musicals and operas. Coming up in the 06/07 year I have a variety of gigs. I start with spending my summer in Banff Ablerta the the Banff Arts Centre, stage managing a production of Die Zauberflote. Then move on the the first of two Manitoba Opera projects (a TYA show followed in the spring by a Co-pro with Opera Lyra Ottawa - Othello), a 3 three hander with Theatre Projects in Winnipeg and a fantastic musical "Seussical" at a new place for me, the Manitoba Theatre for Young People. This all between July 06 to end of April 07- whew!
