Far North Wild rice is a small wild rice growing operation, owned and operated by Richard Russell out of Flin Flon, Manitoba. Richard has been growing wild rice in the north for twenty years. Far North Wild Rice is grown in remote lakes and streams north of the 55th parallel of northern Manitoba and Saskatchewan. The long, warm summer days and the clean pure waters of the north produce this long grain, good flavoured rice which is known to be of the finest in the world. Our rice is certified organic with O.C.I.A. International Inc.

If you go up north in the late fall, amid the falling leaves and crisp air you can see Richard and his crew harvesting the rice. Below you can see Richard in his airboat. This is one of the few concessions to technology used in the harvest. This light flat bottomed boat skims the surface of the shallow waters of the lake shore and allows the harvesters to gather the crop quickly while it is at it's peak quality. There are many factors which may affect the development of a good crop, very high or low water levels, heavy winds and hail, or an early frost can destroy the crop or prevent it from ripening into it's beautiful deep brown colour. These natural events tend to make good wild rice a precious delicacy.

Far North Wild Rice is superior to other wild rices because of it's rich dark colour, deep nutty flavor, and crisp aroma. Also, because it is grown in the natural wild environment of a northern lake it is of a higher quality than the more common patty grown rice. This is because most patty rice is farmed using chemicals and automation, this creates a rice which is inferior in size and flavour. Our wild rice is an organic product.
When purchasing wild rice look for a dark colour, and give it a sniff! If it has a swampy smell this scent will come through as a musty flavour in your cooking. Far North uses pure uncontaminated water when cleaning the rice to help prevent this.

Wild rice can be used in a multitude of dishes, from everyday cooking to gourmet creations. Wild rice triples or more in size, so a little goes a long way! It is a naturally healthy food with only half a gram of fat in 3/4 of a cup. It is also high in fiber, and has good nutritional value.
