Princess Lost

She sat in the dark, alone, the trees envelopingthe sky. She thought she could almost feel their cold dead branches reach out to her, calling her in voices that strangled all thought.
It was not supposed to happen this way. She was not supposed to be here. But she was, and now she did not know what to do.
Several hours ago, when she had first wandered into this wood, she had immediately realized what a place of horrors she had walked into. But when she has tried to flee the way she came, she found she could not find the way she had come before. She could not find the branches she had bent as markers, nor could she find the footprints she had surely made as she traversed the forest floor. The forest would not release her.
And so she had walked amongst the trees for hours, veering left one time, then right another, but no matter which route she took, she always ended up back where she was now. Exhausted by walking in circles, she had eventually given up trying to escape, and now resigned herself to whatever fate was to befall her...
