The
Concert
RShe had been waiting
for this night ever since she'd heard the announcement on the radio:
Darren Hayes was coming to the city.
It was to be a small venue, in a small club at the north end of the
city. Tickets started at $100, and went on sale in two weeks.
She had bought her tickets within minutes of the outlet opening, having
snuck out of work early to do so. But now she had them, and they were
sitting tucked safely inside her jewelry box, next to both her Grandmother's
watch, and Var's matching necklace.
His CD was playing in her stereo as she walked around her kitchen; she
had moved it to the counter so that she could hear it better as she
dried the supper dishes:
"I can see the
sun, and I can feel the rain,
I can feel the wind call your name.
I can feel your love, and there's only one thing I can't ever ever do:
I can't ever get enough of you..."
She smiled as she dried
the last dish and the stereo switched over to the song 'I Miss You'.
Her eyes closed, soft lips moving, she sang the words, thinking of Adam:
"Give me a reason,
why I'm feeling so blue
Everytime I close my eyes, all I see is you
Give me a reason why i can't feel my heart
everytime you leave my side, i just fall apart..."
Indeed, that was how
she felt about him now. He completed her. And it wasn't just a lust
thing - for they still had not made love, and she still felt just as
strongly for him. It wasn't that she needed to be with him 24-7, but
he was always somewhere in her mind, tucked away like a hidden thought
that sprung unbidden into the foremost of her mind whenever she found
herself needing him the most. He had been out of town since Monday,
having to fly to New York for a business meeting, and so she had not
had the pleasure of this company all week. And so the words "..I
don't mean to carry on, I just miss you...and when your walking out
that door, I just miss you...you make me wanna ask for more...yeah,
its true, I miss you..." rang true in her heart.
So many times, when they were just laying there, in each other's arms
in her bed, she had wanted to ask him more, to learn just one more thing
about him that she didn't know. For there was still so much she found
that she didn't know, and wanted to know....
But she had always quelled it, for the physical feeling of his arms
around her always superceded any of her mental desires, and so she had
yet to delve deeper into his mind.
But tonight was not about delving into his mind. Or hers even. Tonight
was just for fun. She would meet him at the airport, and from there
they were to hail a cab to the venue, where they would take in the musical
stylings of one of the most talented vocalists Raeia had ever heard.
And also, she thought, smiling to herself this time, one of the hottest
artists she had ever met. She shook her head, laughed a little at her
self - he was the one celebrity who could send shivers down her spine,
and make her think the thoughts noone else could...but still, she could
easily control herself.
But what to wear?
The last concert Raeia had gone to in the city was the free one that
happened downtown every year in city square at Christmas - and that
was hardly the same thing. So as always, she was in danger of being
late to meet Adam - and accumulating a large pile of clothes on her
bed. Pursing her lips at her reflection in the mirror, she unbuttoned
the cream colored blouse she had worn to the office earlier in the day,
and slipped it off her shoulders, tossing it over her chair and following
it with the matching bra.
She flipped through the hangers in her closet, finally pulling out a
beautiful red blouse that she had bought only a few weeks before. Unlike
normal blouses, this one was held closed by a row of tiny hook-and-eyes
rather than buttons - it took her a full minute and a half to do up
each one. Stripping off her slacks and adding them to the pile on her
chair, she slipped into her favorite knee-length black skirt. She looked
into the mirror, and smiled at her reflection: while she may not be
dressed in a low-cut bar top and mini skirt like she might be tempted
to wear to a rock concert, she knew she was dressed perfectly for the
event tonight, especially when she pulled on her thigh-high boots to
complete the ensemble. Green eyes sparkling, she blew a kiss to her
mirror, then grabbed her purse and headed out the door.
Adam saw Raeia instantly as he stepped out into the airport lounge,
whistled appreciatively as he caught sight of what she was wearing.
A low growl escaped his throat, and he couldn't help pulling her close
to him and nibbling on her neck in appreciation.
"Damn…" he said, leaning in for a kiss which she slowly and
softly returned.
"I've missed you too," she said, laughing quietly to herself
as she basked in his desiring glance. She released her hand from around
his waist, used it to remove the one that was slowly making its way
down her back, causing electric tingles down her spine. "Later,"
she said, declining his invitation, "Dinner first, and the concert,
then we'll see what I let you do…"
He caught her hand in his, lifted up to his lips and kissed it in submission.
"As my lady desires, she shall have," he acquiesced.
"Always, my leige," She replied, giggling as she always did
at his calling her 'my lady'. "Was there any particular place you
wanted to head to tonight?"
"No," he replied, "I'm the one who was away from you,
therefore it's your choice tonight."
"Alright, then I vote for Romeo's."
"Sounds wonderful," he replied, claiming his suitcase as it
came through the checkpoint. "Shall we?" he asked, offering
his free arm to her once more.
She accepted with a wink and a squeeze, and the pair set off for the
restaurant, reunited again.
Supper at Romeo's was a quiet affair - while they had not seen each
other in a week, they didn't really take the time to talk. Rather, they
each ate their food in quiet silence, occasionally stopping to look
into each other's eyes or lay a soft caress upon the other's hand -
to talk would have meant breaking the comfortable silence that had settled
around them like a favorite childhood blanket. With the exception of
Raiea once excusing herself to use the restroom, no words were spoken
between them after they'd placed their orders with the maitre'd. The
check was just as quietly played, and the couple stepped out into the
night air.
The venue was only a few blocks from Romeo's, so the pair decided to
walk under the streetlights and stars rather than hail a cab for such
a short distance. Finally, Raeia broke the silence. "Adam…"
her voiced trailed off into the moonlight as she ceased walking and
paused at a streetcorner.
"Yes?" he asked, looking into her eyes.
"What means the most to you in life?" she asked suddenly.
He looked a little startled, but not offended. "Why do you ask?"
he asked, giving his head a brief shake at her odd question.
"I was just thinking, is all," She replied. "We've barely
said a word to each other since you stepped off the plane, and as we
were walking along here, I just realized how little we seem to talk
sometimes, and how little it is that we actually know about each other.
And it frightens me, I guess. I'm sorry, I didn't mean to ask such a
weird question, it was just the first one that popped into my head,
and I had to ask it, to break the silence."
He laughed softly at her ramblings, took her hands in his and kissed
each one softly. "Happiness means the most out of everything to
me. My own, and the happiness of the ones I love. It's the reason I
exist: to bring happiness to everyone. I have to do it, there is no
other way."
"Alright," she said, looking at the sight of her small hands
enfolded in his, "I can understand that answer." She kissed
his hands just as he had kissed hers moments earlier, then looked his
eyes, shining under the lamplight. She closed her eyes and shook her
head, laughing at herself a little, "I won't ask you any more questions
tonight," she promised. "If I do you'll have to think of a
way to punish me," she said jokingly.
Adam's brow furrowed, he looked down for a second. "I'd never punish
you, or anyone," he said darkly, pulling his hands away from hers
and hiding them in his pockets.
Raeia blinked at his reaction, "Oh Adam, I didn't mean," she
apologized, surprised at his response. She moved forward to him, wrapped
her arms around him in a hug. "I know you'd never hurt me,"
she whispered in his ear.
"Good," he replied, pulling back a little so that he could
look her in the eye. "Because I never would." She hugged him
until she sensed whatever emotion he'd been experiencing left him, and
then they continued on their way to the small club.
The show itself was mezmorizing:
