What to WEAR ?

White gis are the normal outfit worn but beginners can wear any comfortable clothes that will not restrict movement or allow hands or feet to catch and be injured. Both the gi and the belt have purpose in training. The belt, if tied properly, will help the student understand when the middle is tensed to provide focus and perform techniques. As well, the ends of the belt will react to movement such as rotation, or snap of the hip, providing physical indication of technique. The gi allows the student to feel the snap of the technique as well as hear the sound of keeping the elbows close to body and the scissor action of the legs.

A white is gi worn because it is simple and does not distract from the class. Crests representing the organization are worn on the left side of the jacket. Nothing is worn on the feet so that students learn to grip the floor for better control. Necklaces and other jewelry should not be worn to class as they may cause injury. Medical alert bracelets should be taped tight to the wrist if they must be worn.

The gi should be loose fitting with sleeve lengths no longer than the wrist, but no shorter than mid forearm. Pant length should not be longer than the ankle and no shorter than half way up the calf. Folding is not an option. The length should be hemmed.

Gi's must be cleaned regularly and you will be told if your gi is in need of a cleaning by a sempai or sensei.
