Snake Hill
In the early years of the 1920's and 1930's, the old timers who had hunted and trapped in the area told of a hill in the mountain known to them as "Snake Hill." Rumors persisted for years, although no one actually believed these tales. Local residents tended to doubt the truth of these reports because it would depend upon the season of the years just how many snakes you would see. In the early spring and fall there were thousands of the writhing creatures. During Summer months, you may see a few straggling snakes who haven't ventured too far afield.
Snake Hill is the name given to a shale cliff inside the Riding Mountain National Park boundary approximately eleven miles south and west of Ochre River. It's exact location is two and one-half miles west of the south west corner of section 31-22-17 WPM.
Snakes migrate to this area each autumn. As colder weather approaches, the snakes from miles around make their way to this hill and slither into the cliff and surrounding knolls for their winter hibernation. There must be hundreds of tunnels lacing the interior of this hill, judging from the outward appearance of the face of the cliff. The particular type of shale in this hill must provide the proper winter protection.
These snakes are drawn to Snake Hill every autumn by some mysterious instinct unknown to us. They hibernate there until the warmth of the spring sun stirs them to life again in early May.
Northern Lights
Do you look and listen to the auroroa borealis (Northern Lights) in the autumn and winter? Their brilliant lights and swishing movements are another of Nature's wonders. They are said to be much brighter and have more sound here than they do at Churchill.
Ochre River United Church
