Native Grass Cultivars and Ecotypes for Prairies. Anyone considering using native grasses in the prairies should select varieties adapted to the area. The use of good quality seed is recommended. Common seed is often in better supply than certified seed, and can be used as long as a seed analysis certificate is provided. An alternative to commercial produced cultivars or ecotypes is to use locally harvested native material, if a seed analysis certificate is provided.

Our experience has shown that plant material can generally be moved about 300 miles north or 200 miles south of its point of origin without serious adaptation difficulties. Movement of plant material east or west is affected primarily precipitation and elevation. An increase in 1000 feet in elevation is equivalent to a move of about 175 miles north.

Native grasses are referred to as cool-season or warm-season. Cool-season native grasses are most productive in the spring and fall during periods of average temperatures and moisture. Warm-season native grasses are most productive in the summer during periods of higher temperatures. Below is a list of commonly utilized varieties on prairies and their points of origin.
