GENERATION I

Thomas Scott (1786, Bristol, Avon - 1850) m Sarah ? (1786, Bristol - 1850, Chesterton, Cambridgeshire)      

In 1841, Thomas was a plasterer in Christchurch, Gloucester.  All children were born in Gloucestershire.  There are some discrepancies in birth years in the 1841 census.

 

The gaps in the birth years suggest there may have been other children who died young, and possibly another wife.

                 He was a plasterer in 1841 and a cordwainer in 1851.  (Children born in East Allington - 1851, 1861 census)

Herbert Scott (Mar  23, 1873 - Apr 29, 1972) m.(2) Clara Wood (Aug 31, 1886 - Jan 7, 1977) on Mar 30, 1907 in Rugby.

 

Due to a strike at the Sheffield Steel Mills, the family immigrated to Montreal.  Eventually they settled in Pointe St. Charles.  The family sailed from Liverpool on Dec 15, 1920 aboard the Empress of France.  They landed in St. John, NB and arrived in Montreal on Dec 24, 1920 by train. Eventually they settled in Pointe St. Charles.

 

They lived in the second floor of a flat on Church Ave in Cote St Paul, near Verdun until May 1, 1925.  (May 1st is moving day in Montreal, when leases expire.)  They later lived at 3 Forfar St in Victoriatown (named for the nearby Victoria Bridge), commonly called Goose Village.   (It was named for the geese that were hunted on the nearby marshy waterfront.)  Goose Village was bulldozed in 1964 to pave the way for Expo 67 and Forfar disappeared with it.

The family subsequently lived at 1720 Mullin St and 529 Charron, all in the Pointe.  Herbert and Clara lived with Edie, and later, Edie & Willie Hill, at 818 Liverpool and 543 Charron, before moving to 60-43rd Ave, Pincourt, Ile Perrot, in the early 1960’s.

 

Herbert worked at Peck’s Rolling Mills until his retirement in the 1940’s.  Clara worked as an office cleaner while in Canada.

                                         Gladys worked for Imperial and Rothman’s Tobacco Cos in the packaging depts.  During the war, she worked as housekeeper and babysitter for Dr Fraser E. Gurd, whose family owned Gurd’s Ginger Ale.  She worked at Northern Electric and trained as a nurse, working at several hospitals in Montreal and for the St John Ambulance.  They moved to Winnipeg in 1946.

                                         Phil was a militia member and served overseas with the Service Corps in WWII.  He also worked for a milk company and was a career member of the Canadian Army Provost Corps.  After retirement he worked as a chauffer in Montréal.
