Notes: 1. Thomas Odenbreit provided information that allowed me to start this genealogy 5 generations earlier. The Luy family comes from Windesheim in Germany, and many Luys still live there. The Luys are evidently related to the Ottenbreits of the Brokenhead area of Manitoba, but the exact relationship is undetermined. The information on Generations 1 & 2 comes from church records in Windesheim and Genheim; 3 to 5 comes from Huber’s book (see the bibliography.)

Obviously, one or both of the years are incorrect. I have used census and military records to note alternate dates.

4. I have attempted to translate the German in Huber’s book for some of the information below for the generations 3 to 5. I apologize but my German is very rusty and I am unfamiliar with some of the locales mentioned. The book gives more detail about where family members lived.

5. The Beckersdorf colony was established in 1784 near Pidhaytsi (Podhajce, Podgaytsy) in Galicia by the Austrian government to provide a German speaking presence in what was an area populated by Ukrainian (primarily) and Polish speaking residents.

6. Huber’s book contains many stories about the travels, trials, and suffering of the Luys who remained in Germany and the Ukraine during the Second World War and the effect of the war on them.

7. As a point of interest, John Luy and a Peter Luy, Austrian natives, received draft notices for the Canadian Army in WWI, to fight the Germans and Austrians. They were assigned to the 1^st depot battalion of the Manitoba Regiment. John did serve overseas.

Martin (Louis) Luy, a single person, is recorded as coming from Windesheim in Kreis Kreuznach, and passing through Märisch, Neustadt on Oct 13, 1784. The exchequer records in Vienna for 1786 list a married but childless Martin Luy in Weißkirch, Chur-Trier. The parish index in 1867 (1787?) lists the birth of Barbara Luy. The deed for the Pfeiffers of Farm 7 in Beckersdorf states that her parents were Martin and Maria (no maiden name given), and that she married Josef Fuchs. The Luys occupied farm 34.

(Poitr from Beckersdorf area near the town of Pidhaici (Podhacje) in Galicia, while Karolina was from the Northeastern area of Austria.)

(The church in Ladywood, Manitoba, has the name recorded as Luj, possibly with 2 dots above the j- this may have been an error with the 2 dots to go above the u. The 1906 census of Western Canada has Luz; the 1901 and 1911 censuses have Luy.) Both are probably buried in the St. Peter and Paul Roman Catholic Cemetery in Ladywood in unmarked graves. An intensive search of the cemetery in Aug., 2009, failed to locate their grave stones. Their son and daughter-in-law, Peter and Mary Luy, are listed as contributors (names as Luj) on a plaque on a monument in the cemetery honouring the pioneer members.

The 1901 census has Peter arriving in Canada in 1896 and the remainder of his family in 1897.

The passenger manifest of the ship Arabia, of the Hamburg Amerika line, departing Hamburg on May 8, 1897 for Montreal, has the following Luy family from Beckersdorff:
