Updated: Jun, 2011 by Roy Eldridge (reldridg@mts.net)   Please refer to the genealogy in the header of any email.

William Eldridge was one of the United Empire Loyalists. He was a private in the 3rd Battalion of the 2nd Delancey Brigade (also known as the Delancey Battalions or the Delancey Cowboys.) The Delancey Brigade was formed by James Delancey in Westchester County, New York, while his cousin Oliver Delancey formed the New York Volunteers in Long Island, New York. The majority of the Delanceys immigrated to Annapolis Royal with James’ brother, Stephen Delancey.

In the mid 1780’s, William emigrated to Beaver Harbour, Charlotte County, New Brunswick, which was established by a group of Quakers in 1783. (See Esther Wright: The Loyalists of New Brunswick). On July 7, 1794, William stated he had been in Beaver Harbour for 10 years.

The ancestry of William Eldridge is unknown.  There are many theories and rumours, some of which are listed blow.

1.   An Eldridge family rumour states that William may have had a brother Barnabas who went to Nova Scotia. (See the lineage for William Eldred (Eldridge) in Appendix 4, which seems to disprove this claim.)  There is no evidence to support this claim.  However, the rumour dates back over 100 years and would probably have some truth behind it.  This rumour would work if William Eldridge was originally born Asahel Eldridge (1755) of whom there is no further record.

2.   It is possible that William may have descended from the Eldridges of Battle, Sussex, England.  See Appendix 5 for two suggested connections (and one refutation) to the Eldridges of Battle.  (Ray Shurmer, Robert Eldridge.)

3.   Margaret Burnham reported (Apr, 2003) that the death record for Andrew Eldridge [Joseph2, William1] from the Maine State Archives stated that Joseph Eldridge was born in Exeter, ME.  This more likely would have been Exeter, NH, as the first settlers of Exeter ME arrived around 1800-1801.  There were Eldridges and Beans in Exeter, NH, in the 1760’s - 1780’s, including one Sarah Bean.  This suggests that William Eldridge may have been in Exeter, NH around 1775.  However, there were also Eldridges in Exeter, Kent Co, RI, around 1750.  See Appendix 12 for more information on the Beans and Eldridges of Exeter, NH, and for Exeter ME and RI..

4.    William may have originated in Virginia and then moved to New Jersey, or was born in New Jersey.  (Vida (Gibbs) Eldridge, 1994)

William (1756 - 1829/30) married Sarah Bean or Behn.   William Eldridge had at least 6 children (Generation II).  The gaps in the ages and the 35 year difference between the youngest and oldest children suggest there may have been more children and possibly another wife.  However, in Appendix 12, I have suggested a Sarah Bean who would have been less than 16 at the time of the birth of Joseph, and less than 50 for Rosaland.

At the end of this genealogy are several other appendices.  These include partial genealogies of:

1.      The families of the spouses of the children of William the Loyalist: Trynor, Guptill, Justason, Dickson.

2.      The main families of Emily Cross who married James Eldridge: Cross, Wright.

3.      Two of the families of the spouses of the children of Martin and Eliza Eldridge: Bates and  Barry (I have omitted my grandfather Roy's wife, Mary Winning.  Her genealogy can be found elsewhere on this page.  I have also omitted Clare’s wife, Grace Borthwick - see the Zadock Hawkins web page).

I have tried to show some of the links between these families.

In addition to anecdotal information, I have used birth, death and marriage records, obituaries, church records, Canada census reports from 1851, 1871, 1881, 1891, 1901 and 1911, US census reports from 1850, 1860, 1870, 1880, 1900, 1910 and 1930, and various web pages.  I found discrepancies and errors in many of these, including with all probability, this genealogy.
