     Konstantine Olinek m Hunya (Anne) Watamaniuk

 

        (Konstantine emigrated to Bukovina, Austria, from Northern Greece.

          Anne was Ruthenian.)

     I.   Dimitri2 (Dan) Olenick (Nov 8, 1870 - Oct 7, 1950) m Eva Kotovitch or Katowitz (1889 - Sept 25, 1933) in 1908.  MB Vital Statistics has his death on 24/09/1933 at 43 years.

 

Born in Bukovina, Austria, which is now part of Romania, Dan served 3 of 7 years in the Austrian Army.  He immigrated to Canada in 1903 and became a Canadian citizen on July 2, 1909, under the name Dan Olonik, former citizen of Austria, and of ethnic Ukrainian origin.  The name evolved to Olenick when the children were born.  The Registrar’s Office in Souris Manitoba recorded the last name as Olenick, according to the pronunciation, as Dan could neither read nor write.

Dan, through brother Wasyl, sent sums of money to a family named Olinek in Bukovina.  This family confirmed receipt of the money.  A possible interpretation was that he was supporting a family from a previous marriage.  Another is that he could have been sending money to his parent(s) or to siblings who remained in Bukovina.

Both Dan and his brother Wasyl married sisters, through arranged marriages.

The 1911 census for Manitoba-Brandon-9 Souris p. 29 has the name Olionick(?) in the transcript.  The actual census has the name Olinick.  The census lists:

    Manitoba Vital Statistics lists the death of an unknown male Olenick, (first name = SB (Still born?), in Souris on April 17, 1930.

                       

                                    Manitoba Vital Statistics lists the death of an unknown female Olenick, age 8 months, in Brandon, on Nov 9, 1910.  (Souris may have been recorded as Brandon at that time.)  This may have been a child of Dan and Eva.


 

3.   (Konstantine1) There were several Olenick sisters, none of whom lived very long.

Note on Kotovitch: (an earlier reference had the name as Katowicz)

 

Eva was the oldest sister, Maria was the youngest.  There was a sister, Katherine, and a brother, Harry, in between them.  Katherine remained in Poland (Ukraine). She was married and had children and lived to be at least 70.  Harry was killed in the (first?) world war.  Neither came to Canada.
