Text Box: Text Box: BIOGRAPHICAL HIGHLIGHTS

Words form the thread on which we string our experiences.
--Aldous Huxley

I was born, raised and educated in Winnipeg, Manitoba.  It was there that I connected with my life and business partner David Malloy.  We met in July, 1990 and married a year later.   Although we were accustomed to the hustle and bustle of city life we decided to change our lifestyle and move to the country.    In December of 1994 we found a home in Southcentral Manitoba.   It took us awhile to let go of our wandering ways and after  a few adventures and misadventures we finally put down roots and are blooming where we are planted in Manitou, MB. (See You Can Come Home Again Article).   We now reside in a lovely rural community with our two dogs and five cats and are not planning to go anywhere else.

My interest in writing started at an early age and I was always jotting down ideas and observations in my journal.  Then during the last year of high school I submitted an article to the Nelson McIntyre yearbook.  When it was printed, positive feedback from teachers and students prompted my English Teacher Mrs. Walton to strongly suggest that I further develop what she thought was a “natural ability” to write. Had she not taken a personal interest in my early creative efforts I may never have had the confidence to pursue a career in writing.

During my early twenties I decided to improve my skills and began taking writing courses.  The process of handing assignments in and receiving honest feedback helped me grow as a writer. The training I received introduced me to the importance of query letters and how to use them as a marketing tool. A query letter should tell the editor why a topic would be important to their readership. It should also give some indication of why you would be a good candidate to write it.  It is an unwritten law within the publishing industry that the content on query letters has to be kept to one page.

Concise queries show an editor that the context and angle of an article are clearly thought out.  Besides the idea of a query is to create interest but leave the editor wanting to contact the writer for more information rather than automatically rejecting the topic because of information overload.

Armed with that information my confidence grew and I began contacting local newspapers and magazines. After surviving a few rejections they eventually became easier to accept. Sometimes submission refusals have little to do with the quality of the query letter…editors are just not buying what writers are trying to sell at that particular time.
