Now that you have completed your
web based search of the various
components of an animal cell, please
answer the following questions related to the information you have found on these cell components .You may hand in a written or a computer typed assignment. This web based search assignment is due at the beginning of class on MondayNovember 5th, 2007. Any late assignments will not be accepted. Now you are ready to answer some questions!!! 1. Which part of the animal cell contains peroxisomes and lysosomes? What are the main functions of peroxisomes and lysosomes within an animal
cell?
2. What compounds are ribosomes responsible for producing? What important genetic process are ribosomes required for? What region of the cell are ribosomes located? 3. Name three cell components which are found in both animal cells and plant cells? Name two cell components that are only found within animal cells? 4. Name two main functions of the plasma membrane. How many layers make up the plasma membrane? What is the name of this layer? and what is the molecular composition of this layer? 5. What cellular structure contains the genetic material of the cell? What is the name of the double-layered membrane which separates this part of the cell from the cytoplasm? 6. An animal cell contains both a smooth and a rough endoplasmic reticulum. What organelle is associated with one but not the other? What are the main functions of the smooth and the rough endoplasmic reticulums? Where are they located within an animal cell? 7. What organelle is referred to as the "powerhouse of the cell"? Can this organelle produce it's own genetic material? What is the main function of this organelle? Draw and label a diagram of this organelle. Label the main parts of this diagram. 8. What is a centriole and are these structures found in plant cells? 9. What is the function of the Golgi apparatus? What other cellular components is it associated with? 10. Draw a diagram of an animal cell containing the following cellular components: mitochondria, nucleus, Golgi apparatus, smooth and rough endoplasmic reticulum, plasma membrane, ribosomes, cytoplasm, lysosomes and peroxisomes. Label each component on your diagram. 11. Provide a reference page stating the ten websites used to answer the above questions. The
