As a child
in the small farming village in western Germany where he was raised, Master
Chef Kurt Wagner of Gasthaus Gutenberger liked nothing better than to spend
his time in the kitchen.
By the age of 13, Kurt Wagner had no doubts about his career aspirations -
he wanted to be a chef on a ship.
His apprenticeship began the following year and by age 17, he was doing just
that. His career afforded him the opportunity to "learn as much as possible
in as many places as possible," he says.
Arriving in Canada with his family in September 1982, Kurt and his wife Rita
opened a simple, but popular country diner in Wawanesa, which he later renovated
and reopened as a fine dining establishment that rapidly garnered favourable
attention, as well as the 1988 GOLD MEDAL for fine dining from the Manitoba
Restaurant Association.
1995, Kurt and Rita Wagner opened Gasthaus Gutenberger in Winnipeg. Kurt’s
menu predominantly consists of authentic german cuisine and selections include
beautifully prepared rinderroulade, schnitzels and spätzle noodles,to
name a few, while also featuring some non-German dishes such as Chicken Cordon
Bleu and Filet Mignon.
Wagner explains, "Everything we feature is authentic, but I also have
items that cater to those with different tastes."
Whether your choice is his Schweizer Rahmschnitzel, the house favourite, or
New York steak - Wagner does not disappoint.
And because of this versatility his restaurant has attracted a wide and appreciative
audience.
My personal favourite? Wagner remains true to his roots, "I
still love Schnitzel," Schnitzel is a strange thing for a German
- you cannot get tired of it!"
