Child abuse is not a private family matter. Most abusive parents do not consciously set out to harm their children, but the consequences of their actions can be devastating. Children are often too afraid to report the abuse. They expect that no one will believe them, or they feel ashamed to disclose their family’s dysfunction. They fear the consequences of intervention by authorities. In most cases they love their abuser/s and do not want to be separated from them. The Parkland Crisis Centre’s Child & Youth Program has a mission to assist children in crisis and to help parents learn how to raise their children in a positive, nurturing environment.
