Background to the Project

In the mid 1980's a committee was formed in South Central Manitoba to address the literacy needs of regional residents. The original adult programs developed at that time have expanded to include part-time literacy and ESL classes; workplace language programs and family literacy programs. As the programs have grown, the resource collection has also continued to grow. It is now a 1200 volume collection housed in the Pembina Valley Learning Centre in Winkler, Manitoba.

The resources have been divided into twenty-five categories. The reading section alone has more than 600 titles.

Adult learners using the reading materials in the PVLC collection have reading levels ranging from beginning to advanced. The original library listing contained books with that range of reading levels, but the books were neither listed nor shelved by levels of readability. Consequently, selecting books with appropriate reading levels involved previewing each book by the learner and/or teacher, who may have needed to examine many books before finally locating material at a suitable reading level. Frustration often occurred when the search for material ended unsuccessfully in the time allotted. It became obvious that a classification system would be helpful for quick access to reading materials at the appropriate level.

Recognizing this need, we began to examine methods of doing readabilities and to consider the process we would follow to classify our books. An explanation of the entire project can be found in "Methodology."
