This album was a tribute to the early death of Andy Wood. Andy Wood
was found in a comatose in his apartment from a heroin overdose two
weeks prior to the release of his band, Mother Love Bone's second
album release, Apple. Andy remained in a coma for several days and
never recovered. He died March 19, 1990.
Chris Cornell, Andy's close friend, decided to make a tribute to him
with songs Reach Down, and Say Hello 2 Heaven. He recruited Mother
Love Bone members Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament and fellow drummer Matt
Cameron from his band, Soundgarden. He also grabbled Mike McCready
who coincidentally was with working Gossard, Cameron and Ament.
They called themselves Temple Of The Dog from a line in Mother Love
Bone's song Man Of Golden Words. Together, they put together more
songs than Cornell intended and were also still recruiting members.
During auditioning, they found Eddie Vedder.
Eddie Vedder helped do back up vocals on Hunger Strike, one of Temple
Of The Dog's most beloved songs.
The album was release in April of 1991 and was a big hit.
