"'Bayleaf' represents the idea/concept of a child who doesn't
understand why there's a heard old leaf in his pasta sauce, and
only later comes to understand how that leaf imparts a special
flavor/seasoning." -- Stone Gossard
Back in 2001, Stone Gossard
released a solo album entitled, Bayleaf. If you're thinking of a similar
sound to Pearl Jam, think again. Bayleaf features many amusing and
odd sounds that Stone is popular for doing in Pearl
Jam's songs. From the neat sounding beat of Hellbent to the
harder rock sounds of Pigeon, this album can't easily be defined as a
single genre of music.
However, Gossard does get help from friends, Ty Wilman and Pete
Droge. Ty Wilman sings 3 of the 10 songs, Unhand Me, Fend It Off, and
Cadillac. Although I prefer Stone's voice over Ty's, Ty does do a
good job.
Stone Gossard doesn't have a great voice or even really strong lyrics but the beat
makes up for that.
Pete Drodge helped finish and mix the record. He played and sang on
almost every track.
Ron Weinstein plays piano for Gossard, with Mike Stone on drums and
Guy Davis on bass. Matt Chamerlin (former Pearl Jam drummer) also
played drums on Bore Me, and Fits.
In the end, this is an excellent album with some really innovative
songs, and interesting sounds.
