Original Phase (1) PLM Jeeps (1981- early 90's) came with a genuine Jeep grille, narrow military tires, black windshield frame, and black removable radiator cap.
Mid Phase (2) PLM Jeeps (1988/ish - mid 90's) tend to appear with a molded radiator cap and either a Grille AND Brush Guard or No Grille w/ Brush Guard. They have also been outfitted with roll bars.
Final Phase (3) PLM Jeeps (Mid 90's - 2006) have no Jeep grille and continue to use the bush guard, roll bars, and street tires.
Modern Phase (4) PLM Jeeps (2006 - present) have modified chassis containing slots above the rear wheel wells for the new soft (rag) top to attach. They also come with larger Off Road tires. Some models do not continue the use of roll bars.
Grilles Note: It seems that there is a transition period between the Grille and Non-Grille PLM Jeeps - although not a definite one and is very vague as to the actual dates of each model's changeover. The same situation appears with the use of the word Jeep in set names. Scattered use bounces around during the years of production. These occurrences are probably due to copyright issue with Daimler / Chrysler Corporation.
The Limited Edition Jeep w/ Speed Boat - was an upgraded version of the original #3198 (1988-95) and was made in Spain. They were available ONLY from May 2001 (EUR) until stocks are depleted. They were issued for the 2002 27th Anniversary of PLM. If you find one in a store -- grab it or lose it! It is not known if they will be re-released at some further date in the regular line of models.
Likewise, the German Exclusive Safari w/ Zebra striped Jeep was not available outside of Germany and was only produced for the 2006 Year. Again, if you can find one, grab it!
