Oak in the Acorn Labyrinth

Photo of Oak in the Acorn Labyrinth

Oak in the Acorn Labyrinth  is roughly thirteen meters in diameter.
It follows the geometry of the pavement labyrinth at Chartres Cathedral, early thirteenth century.
This turf-and-reclaimed-brick labyrinth was begun on the summer solstice and dedicated on the autumn equinox, 2002.
The "labrys" areas are planted to lamium (Lamium maculatum).  Open to the public during daylight hours, seasonally.

Chartres Cathedral from the westOak in the Acorn Labyrinth is aligned with the summer solstice sunrise. The nave of the cathedral at Chartres, France is aligned with the summer solstice sunset. The opening is to the West.  Site considerations dictated the eastern (sunrise) orientation of Oak in the Acorn Labyrinth.

Here is the cathedral at Chartes from the West.  The rose window is the same diameter as the labyrinth within, and would overlay the labyrinth if this West facade were laid down to the East.

The labyrinth is open to all, in season, from sunrise to sunset.  Other times and larger groups by appointment.  Email with "Labyrinth" in the subject oakacorn@mts.net

These are two of thousands.  The first provides a good starting point, with numerous links.
Jeff Saward's site (Caerdroia [the word is the Welsh]) is wonderful.
