Painting above the Assiniboine Valley (1976) - Photograph by Greg McCullough

Out There

So I headed west
To a favourite spot
And got completely lost out there
With my skies and fields and trees,
And painted watercolors and looked at leaves
And munched an apple with some cheese
And ducked the raindrops
And watched and listened to the geese
     fly over in their "V"
And leaned to see a rainbow through the branches.

Most of the paintings shown in this Gallery have Manitoba themes and most were made in the Manitoba landscape which inspired them.  One of the most gratifying comments I have ever had with respect to my work were words by friends returning from a day spent in the Manitoba countryside: “We saw a whole lot of Pantons today!”. However, the irony is that I have never set out to chronicle the Manitoba landscape, but have just used that landscape to provide me with the raw materials I needed to try to make successful paintings.  Somehow or other, the spirit of that landscape which I happen to love seems to come singing through!

These Gallery images of paintings have been randomly selected from my painting inventory which goes back approximately 40 years.  I have tried to make a representative selection—one which ‘looks at’ some of the different mediums and styles of my work during this period—, but the inventory is large and this is but a small sampling.

I began to work in watercolor in the late 1960s and this was my primary medium for almost 20 years during which time I made many watercolor paintings. My output of oil paintings was never large and will not now increase—I no longer work in that medium—, and there never have been many acrylic paintings. My medium of choice for painting in the new century seems to be dry pastel though I still do some watercolors and occasionally mix the two mediums. Otherwise I have also been exploring the welcome resources I got when I acquired a digital camera in September 2002. My penchant for having fun in the image making-process has extended into photography.

The images of paintings shown here are all of works which are for sale. Inquiries are invited and may be directed to
