This was done with Ulead GIF Animator 5 and a plug-in to do the burnt edges effect.
A bit of work involved here - maybe I'll write a tutorial for it someday. It would be easy if the road was straight!
Someone had inquired on how to do an animation showing a map and the route to point A to point B, so after I gave one answer, which worked for them, I decided to try another way. And here is the result.
