lots of activity at the HAC these days. the Birtle Art Club is exhibiting in the gallery this month; local art clubs have started up again, likewise school of dance; elementary school children are once again experiencing Listening with Paint; upcoming workshops include pumpkin cans, beginners sketching & watercolor lessons, and recycled quilt. check with gwen .
our fundraiser this year is a talent contest to be broadcast on radio station CKDM friday November 14. if you sing, dance, play, recite or have some other noteworthy talent, sign up and help us out, if you're the listening type, pledge support for our performers.
Heritage Chamber Players in concert, Wednesday October 22 in Miniota United Church, Hamiota United Church Saturday October 25, and Sunday October 26 in Souris United Church.

as usual, great stuff in the gallery. it's worth the effort to trudge up the stairs and check out the art work in the upstairs hall and front studio. young people have been hard at work and should be proud of their accomplishments.

thursday tea at the bank delivers dessert. if you can't get out for tea, call us and the special of the day can be delivered to you.

The Mid-West Arts Council is thrilled to announce Hamiota Chamber of Commerce is exclusively sponsoring our presentation of “Munsch Ado About Nothing” on February 20th, 2008 at the Hamiota Elementary School. We have also invited all the area elementary school children to attend. This performance, the work of Canada’s most beloved children’s author, Robert Munsch, gets a hint of Shakespearean flavour, giving a new twist to both classics like “Murmel, Murmel, Murmel” and new favourites, brought to you by the artistic team that gave you “Munschapalooza” and last year’s smash hit, “Love You Forever & Other Stories”, so you can be guaranteed that children of all ages will have a great time! A big "Thank you!" to the Hamiota Chamber of Commerce for your financial support.

the HAC has been alive with activity since school started.
LISTENING WITH PAINT had children on their knees, fingerpainting, 10, 15, 20 at a time.
impressive! budding artists have been working hard at classes with Mary Lowe. the walls reverberated with african drumming at an exciting hands-on workshop with clinician Calla Isaak. art club has been meeting. the gallery hosted a show of super hero masks. and ghosts, ghoulies and witches galore claimed occupancy of the old building on thursday last, some roaming the halls while others lurked in hiding, waiting to scare the wits out of unsuspecting innocent victims. a good time was had by all.

Centennial Tea at the Bank

July 20th was the Centennial Tea at the Bank where 200 people attended. Patrons had a choice of where they could sit to enjoy a selection of twelve of "Our Favourite Desserts" and iced tea or coffee: the Main Gallery, where a collection of photographs and memorabilia of early Hamiota was displayed by the Hamiota and District Archives; the Upper Studio which hosted an Antique Quilt Display by Yolande Ranson, Betty Murray & JoAnn Ramsey; or outside in the beautiful Garden which served as an impromptu Cafe. Twelve volunteers busily served slices of delectable desserts and beverages, cleared tables and kept the people flowing through the Heritage Arts Centre. More than seven hundred dollars was raised which will be used for Programming by the Mid-West Arts Council. Thank you to all the Volunteers and Patrons for their support.

Tea at the Bank will be held every Thursday from 2 - 4pm, through to the end of September with a new Dessert and Loaf featured each week. We now Deliver to area businesses so their staff can enjoy a Sweet on their breaks.

Listening with Paint

the latest adventure in the HAC: children's listening was directed again to the Plainsong by Walter Hekster and then on to texture in sound as perceived thru Antonio Vivaldi's Concerto in F minor - WINTER and Khatchaturian's SABRE DANCE. Then on to texture in colour. Each child got to do two more paintings. Paintings will be returned to students at the school.

it's happening now. the old building is alive with sound. school children from grades one to four have been visiting the arts centre for an adventure in listening that results in a trip to the studio upstairs where long handled brushes and jars of thick paint await. this week the children travelled thru time from a hundred years ago when the building was new and life was different to the present where they were introduced to an original work Plainsong by new music composer Walter Hekster, commissioned specifically for this project. next week - more Plainsong and more.

Katelyn Dawn, a Canadian singer and songwriter, will be performing a solo acoustic show on Thursday, April 26, 2007 at 1:00 pm. We are offering this really exciting opportunity for more than 350 students from Hamiota, Kenton, Birtle, Rossburn and Russell to attend a mainstream pop-rock performance at the Hamiota Collegiate Gymnasium. The concert will be 60-75 minutes in length. Following the show a one hour Performance Workshop will be offered for students who are interested in writing music, playing guitar or pursuing a career in music.

Katelyn Dawn is a dynamic singer who knows how to give her audience an energetic power pop performance with powerful melodies and thought provoking lyrics. Katelyn began writing and performing music at the age of 14. Her early influences are artists such as Jewel, Sheryl Crow, Chantal Kreviazuk, Sarah McLachlan and Michelle Branch to name a few. Katelyn is a passionate, focused and determined musician whose desire is to have the world hear her music!

Listening with Paint

Listening with Paint is an intiative of the Arts Centre’s own Heritiage Chamber Players. This innovative program for school children has been developed in consultation with arts educator, Marilyn Schick. Listening with Paint is not only geared towards enriching the listening experience, but seeks to engage and encourage participants to join in with their own creative expression.

Students visit the Arts Centre as a class for an "up close" encounter with the building, its art, the musicians and their music. In turn they are guided in accessing their own creative response to this experience and expressing it through painting.

The next sessions of Listening with Paint are being offered in May to the Kindergarten through to Grade Four classes of the Hamiota Elementary School.

The MidWest Arts Council is very pleased to be able to offer Listening with Paint without cost to the school children and is grateful for the generous support of:

"Art and culture are important to the development and vitality of a community. In a grassroots fashion, the Council promotes the development of art and culture for citizens of all ages within the Midwest Recreation District. To this end, the Council provides a forum for art exhibitions, performances, dance, music, as well as other activities which encourage individual self-expression."

The Mid-West Arts Council meets every 4th Tuesday of the month. Everyone is welcome to attend and new members are always welcome.

The exhibition in the gallery and the collection in the vault change every month so please come in and have a look!

The Mid-West Arts Council includes all residents within the rural Municipalities of Hamiota, Woodworth, Miniota, Blanshard and the Town of Hamiota. The Board of Directors includes representation from each of these areas. The Council offers programming in each of these districts.
