Therapeutic Touch (TT) is a contemporary interpretation of several ancient healing practices developed by Dolores Krieger PhD., RN., (Professor of Nursing at New York University) and her mentor Dora Kunz in the early 1970's. TT is now practiced and taught by thousands of health care professionals and lay people around the world.
Therapeutic Touch is based on the conscious use of your hands to direct or modulate human energies for therapeutic purposes. It is administered with the intent of helping people change their energy in the direction of health and to facilitate the body's natural restorative processes. It is a complementary therapy that can be used alone or with other healing modalities eg. herbal medicine or conventional medical treatment.
TT is a non-invasive therapy used to elicit the relaxation response, reduce pain, accelerate the healing process and decrease response to stress. Documented benefits of TT from scientific research and numerous doctoral dissertations as well as masters theses include promotion of sleep, decrease in anxiety, reduction of acute and chronic pain, an increase in hemoglobin level and accelerated wound healing. It is used in a variety of settings for such purposes as:
pain reduction
physical healing
relaxation
emotional healing
spiritual healing
TT may be practiced by any practitioner who has successfully completed a beginning workshop addressing the cognitive and experiential aspects of TT and may be offered to any individual whom the practitioner judges may benefit. There are three levels of learning (basic, intermediate and advanced) presently being taught for practitioners in Manitoba. TT is a process that is always individualized and usually does not exceed 30- 40 minutes and may be as short as 5 minutes.
