Julia Ormond portrays Smilla Qaavigaaq Jaspersen, a half-Inuit glacier expert who is greatly disturbed by the death of a young neighbour named Isaiah. The police conclude his death was an accident, but she can tell from the marks in the snow that it was deliberate. As she hunts down the persons responsible for his death, she finds her own life in jeopardy... Ormond is an up-and-coming British actress who is constantly getting more recognition. She was well known in London theatrical circles before her first film role as Catherine the Great in Young Catherine (also with Vanessa Redgrave). She first made her mark with North American audiences in Legends of the Fall as Susannah, and later starred as Lady Guinevere in First Knight. She then teamed up with Harrison Ford for the remake of Sabrina. Her next project is The Barber of Siberia, which also stars Richard Harris. She is divorced, but rumours have it that she is now romantically linked to Smilla co-star Gabriel Byrne.
