Byrne is a very prolific Irish actor - although he only became well-known 10 years ago, he has already appeared in over 40 films. However, acting was not his first career choice. By the time he was 30, he had considered becoming a priest, an archaeologist, and a teacher. Some of his best-known roles have been in Miller's Crossing, The Usual Suspects, and Little Women. His just won the part of D'Artagnan in the upcoming film The Man In the Iron Mask. He was married to actress Ellen Barkin and they had two children, but they are now divorced. Rumours have it that he is currently romantically linked to Smilla co-star Julia Ormond.
