297 PLAQUE FOR HORSE TRAPPINGS, CRAIOVA TREASURE, ROMANIA

First half of fourth century B.C. Silver, height 3.6 cm. Archaelogical Museum, Bucharest.

There are two similar plaques in this treasure, depicting an animal in openwork. Head with open mouth separated from the neck by a border indicating beginning of the mane. The fore-paws touch the lower jaw. Dots and short lines indicate the folds of the underbody in a decorative design. The tail, held against the body, has a spirally curved end. The toes are curved. A flat ring at the back for attaching the the plaque to a strap.
