ABOUT US
I have been involved with
the Havanese for over 13 years,
though intrigue with the breed and extensive research
started a few years even before that. My first Havanese
"Mitzi" is now a senior; still lively, active and a constant
delight. It wasn't long before I had to have another. I
made a conscious
decision, which was right for me, to wait many years
before even considering breeding. I wanted to live with
our Havanese, watch them mature and learn and grow
old, to get injured and sick and get well again, to
know
as much as I could about what the Havanese really were
all about, before choosing whether to breed.
In the meantime I have done many assorted activities with our Havanese including training and competing in Conformation , Agility, Obedience, Rally and some herding. We are also involved in a Pet therapy program. In addition to all this, I am an instructor for a local Canine Education centre where I teach an obedience class geared exclusively to small dogs and also Rally classes. I have been writing canine columns and articles about Havanese for over 10 years for assorted publications of newsletters as well as our national dog Magazine "Dogs in Canada". Most recently, I penned two chapters for Kathryn Braund's breed book : Joyous Havanese.
I am a member of the Canadian Kennel Club, Prairie Toy Association as well as an agility association. I became involved in the Havanese Fanciers of Canada (National Breed club in Canada) at its inception in 1998, and am now the current president.
Our dogs are pets and companions first and foremost. They are raised and live in the home with us as an integral part of our family.
About Mimosa
For our kennel name, I decided on a Spanish
word in honour of Havanese heritage. I also
wanted a word that described Havanese to a
"T". You might be thinking Mimosa is a
beautiful feathery flower , a suitable name as
its reminiscent of the fluffy Havanese coats or
you might be thinking of Mimosa as the
effervescent cocktail ; which works along
with the bubbly Havanese personality. Both
could be the reason and are in part but that's
not all. Mimosa also means something else.
In Spanish, "Mimosa" is a very descriptive
adjective meaning pampered, affectionate, coquette, frolicsome, beguiling, and playful.... in one
word ...... "Mimosa" is everything that a Havanese is. So no matter which "Mimosa" you think of,
it's just right for a Havanese all the way around. Mimosa is a Canadian Kennel Club registered
kennel name.
At Mimosa, we breed very sparingly. Any dogs considered for breeding will be extensively health tested with more testing done prior to each breeding to ensure the healthiest puppies possible. We hope to work toward a line which emphasises healthy dogs, sound structure for all activities of performance and family as well to preserve the temperament and personality the Havanese are renowned for. Bred with care, raised with love and exhibited with pride. We are located in Sunny Manitoba right in the middle of the Canadian Prairies.
When I first became interested in Havanese,
information
was scattered and scarce. I decided at
that time to make a website to share information about the breed. Havanese ABC's is an
educational site to be a resource for people starting a search for a family companion, for breed
newcomers as well as for experienced owners. New information is added all the time.
