GALLERY 6 - Brindle and Variations

Brindle is a pattern (as opposed to a colour) Striping varies greatly ranging from broad sooty-edged stripes so thick you can barely see the light colour peeking through to a clear creamy colour with softly shadowed stripes. Easiest to determine as definite Brindle is crisp well defined dark stripes with bright clear colour between, though things are rarely so perfect. Brindling is best determined in puppies as stripes may be next to impossible to discern on coated adults. Brindle patterning often appears to be affected by two governing expressions with darker patterning appearing on dorsal areas and fainter or non existent patterning on ventral areas.

BRINDLE- Brindle is one of the most complex gene combinations.

At first glance, brindles may appear Sable. But not quite.

The general brindle pattern consists of a dark colour (black, silver or brown) overlayed in a bold pattern tiger striped on a lighter base colour (red, gold, cream). Stripes may be narrow or wide and may extend the entire width of the body or only part. You may recognise this type of markings as being similar to a Boxer or Dane. More subtly, Brindle coats may be two or more colours of hairs intermixed with fine nearly indistinguishable black strips throughout the coat. Whether this is a variation of Brindle or a pattern of its own has not been determined yet.
Many Brindles sport a full or partial dark mask on the face. Dark ears and tail are common as is a dark dorsal stripe along the back.

NOTE - While Brindle is generally considered dominant over any "A" locus patterns, in some cases it does appear to be incompletely dominant over the Black and Tan pattern. This dominance appears to depend on other factors. In this combination, the tan areas of the coat may be brindled. This will be most noticeable in the larger areas of tan.
colour - BLACK & TAN (brindled)
This is my own little Cricket , bred by Havana Canada You can see how her tan points are brindled. Brindling is quite prominent through her chest and feet.

colour - HAVANA BROWN
Xcusador from A Maiden Effort in Holland is a deep Havana Brown NOT chocolate. This is a combination of Black and Mahogany hairs intermixed. A deep Havana Brown has a large proportion of dark brown or black hairs. Note the black pigment on lips and nose.
colour - HAVANA BROWN
Coal, owned by Penny Will of Kennel Havana Canada is also Havana brown. The varying proportions of black, brown and mahogany result in a darker or lighter tobacco colour.
HAVANA BROWN - Some registries call this BLACK BRINDLE. Respectfully I must disagree. I have seen in person, several dogs that are Havana Brown and others that are Silver or Black Brindle and they are not at all alike either as puppies or adults ( in my own personal opinion) Black Brindle is a stripey black on silver/cream giving a very streaky peppery black look to an adult coat. Havana Brown is a subtle mix of mahogany, brown and black throughout giving a distinctly tobacco brown appearance. It is not striped.
Colour - SILVER/BLACK BRINDLE

Pepper from Blue Temptation Kennels in Germany is a very uniform scattering of black stripes brindled onto a silvery white base coat. She is the 10 day old puppy pictured above.

Meeko-Gold
Brindle
colour - GOLD BRINDLE
Born with a full black mask, dorsal stripe and black paws and tail; Meeko's undercoat coat is a beautiful combination of cream, gold, and red and overlaid with black tiger stripes. The dominant colour is a deep caramel gold.
At 1 year old , you can see the gold has softened significantly but still holds a lot of colour. We expect Meeko's colour to deepen again as he matures. Meeko was bred here at Mimosa.
