6 - Brindle
and Variations
Brindle is a pattern (as
opposed to a colour) Striping varies greatly ranging from broad sooty-edged stripes so thick you
can barely see the light colour peeking through to a clear creamy colour with softly
shadowed
stripes. Easiest to determine as definite Brindle is crisp well defined
dark stripes with bright clear colour between, though things are rarely so perfect.
Brindling is best determined in puppies as stripes may be
next to
impossible to discern on coated adults. Brindle patterning often appears to be affected by two
governing
expressions
with darker patterning appearing on dorsal areas and fainter or non existent patterning on ventral
areas.
| BRINDLE- Brindle is
one of the most
complex gene
combinations.
At first
glance,
brindles may
appear Sable.
But not quite. |
The
general
brindle pattern
consists of a dark
colour (black, silver or
brown) overlayed in
a bold pattern
tiger striped on a
lighter base colour
(red, gold, cream).
Stripes may be
narrow or wide
and may extend
the entire width of
the body or only
part. You may
recognise this type
of markings as
being similar to a
Boxer or Dane. |
More subtly, Brindle
coats may be two or more
colours of hairs
intermixed with fine nearly indistinguishable black strips
throughout the coat.
Whether this is a
variation of Brindle or a
pattern of its own has not
been determined yet. |

 |
Many Brindles sport a
full or partial dark
mask on the face. Dark
ears and tail are
common as is a dark
dorsal stripe along the
back.
|
| NOTE - While Brindle is
generally considered
dominant over any "A"
locus patterns, in some
cases it does appear to be
incompletely dominant
over the Black and Tan
pattern. This dominance
appears to depend on
other factors. In this
combination, the tan areas of the coat may be brindled. This will be most noticeable in
the larger areas of tan. |

colour - BLACK &
TAN (brindled)
This is my own little Cricket , bred
by Havana Canada You can see how
her tan points are brindled. Brindling
is quite prominent through her chest
and feet. |
