GALLERY 12 - Before and After
Havanese colours can be very changeable depending in part on the strength of modifying genes like the Silvering gene and Chinchilla gene. In some cases the change is so great that the adult dog looks completely different from its puppy pictures. Others change very little or not at all.

Busan - CHOCOLATE SILVER
Owned by Ingela Lindgren of Darkwilles, in Sweden
Busan - adult. You can see how much the silvering gene has lightened her colour as she matured.

Splash - BLACK BELTON
Bred by MistyTrails, young Splash looks like a typical Black Parti Havanese
At 9 months of age , you can clearly see some wisps of black ticking threading through his back and rump. A haircut at one year of age, shows just how much ticking there is. Splash is a moderately ticked Black Belton

Blondie - CHOCOLATE SABLE
Bred by Moorea Havanese Blondie was born a medium
brown sable. Can you pick her out from her litter mates?
Blondie is the grandaughter of Penny on the Chocolate page.
Blondie has the silvering gene. You can see how her coat is already softening to a golden bronze. Watch for a photo as Blondie Grows up

Love - BRINDLE PIED
Owned by Darkwilles Kennels , Swedish bred at Aco Tara's, "Love" started out as a dark brindle pied with a strong black face mask . In Sweden she is registered as Sable, Black and White.
By 1 year old, Love had lightened to a very light soft reddish colour with subtle darker roots. As she matured, Love's coat started deepening again in intriguing shades of red and charcoal. Brindles are full of surprises as they can lighten and deepen again dramatically.

Linois - CHOCOLATE & TAN
Bred by BedoHavs Linois was born a medium reddish chocolate colour with light tan points. Linois' coat lightened slightly and then darkened again to a very reddish brown and the points turned cream.
After this, the coat lightened more and more as time went by. As he matured, the coat continued to change to the light mocha brown colour it is now.

Annie -SABLE with MASK
Bred by Havana kennels in Canada. Look at her heavy dark mask which covers muzzle, ears, dorsal strip, dark paws and tail.
6 months old - just before a bath and a haircut. Already the tipping is much lighter and you can see a creamy coat underneath. 7 months old - after haircut - Annie's undercoat is a creamy gold which very likely will continue to lighten to a champagne or cream colour.

Ace - SILVER SABLE Bred by Havana kennels in Canada. Born very dark sable, at first it was hard to tell what he would be 7 months old - Silvering started very early with the undercoat turning creamy white and the top coat and tipping become a silvery grey.

Red Sable parti-colour - Catie bred by Lynyear Havanese and owned by Kendra and Harry of K&H Havanese. At 4 months Catie is still a very bright auburn. At 7 months the red has softened significantly but there is still a lot of colour.

Some Havanese soften more slowly. As adults they may retain much of their original colour. As we discover more about Havanese colours, it appears that many Brindles may have been misregistered as Sables. Brindles tend to hold more colour than Sables, or they may lighten significantly and then darken again as they mature.

Emma red sable with white markings - bred in Europe 6 months - owned by Gene and Jody Wood of West Coast USA At 11 months of age, Emma has still retained much of her red gold colouring At 5 years old Emma is still beatufully red.with minimal colour fading.

Mira -11 weeks
old
Mira - Tri-Sable

11 weeks old
Bred by Sineade Kennels in Canada .Owned and loved by Lu Wyland

Mira's colour at 1 year old has lightened to creamy white with red highlights. Registered as a Tri-Sable , as we learn more about colour inheritance and colour genetics in the Havanese , Mira is probably more correctly a Red Brindle Pied
Here at 3 years of age, you can see how her colour has deepened again, and displays black threaded all through the red which is typical of a Brindle.

Jeany and Shaggy. A sweet pair of Littermates from Kennel Blue Temptation in Germany. Shaggy is a rich Red colour and his sister Jeany is a lovely Apricot As you can see, there has been very little colour change in this duo. At 15 months they have kept the colour they had as puppies .

Yola , owned by Fabienne Ernst of Belgium ,was born so dark as to appear almost black which is typical of Havana brown dogs. As they mature they gradually change to varying shades of tobacco brown. Here in the bright sunlight you can see how much she has changed in a few short months. Her coat is a mix of black, brown and auburn hair. Havana browns are sometimes mistaken for Chocolate but they are not. True chocolates have liver pigment while Havana Browns have black pigment.

Nb: Some registires call this colour Black Brindle.

Pixie from Elfin Havanese set out to delight and confuse everyone with her many colour changes. Starting out deep black; by 8 months she had turned a reddish mahogany brown. Was she perhaps a Havana Brown like Yola above? At this stage, they certainly look similar.

Pixie wasn't done yet with her colour tricks. As you can see, in her case, the brown was simply a stepping stone on the way to her final Charcoal Blue colour.

Some colours may lighten significantly and then deepen again like this Gold Brindle Parti

Adventurous 10 week old Tiger is busy exploring his new home.
Onwned and loved by Dina Planche.
By 5 months of age Tiger's coloured patches have softened to an intriguing mix of black, gold, red and silver. The silvering gene has been at work and you can see how much his face has already faded. Around 6 months of age a new development is taking place. Where Tiger's coat was originally white along his back, now a broad golden dorsal stripe is growing in. By 9 months, the gold dorsal stripe is getting darker and more prominent as are the silver brindle patches on his side. It will be interesting to see how much more change is to come.

Beautiful little Cirlkeline from Denmark'sKennel Silky Dog looks like a typical black/white puppy ( 7 weeks old). In her next photo, at 17 months, there appears to be very little change BUT.... As she matures some of her coat is turning a deep brown. This may be the beginning of the black turning blue. This change to blue can start as early as 6 months of age or as late as 5-6 years. We will update as she matures.

Jamaica from Arizona's R'Gang , born black, already at 6 weeks is showing distinctive signs of silvering around the muzzle. As Jamaica matures the coat is lightening to a silvery pewter colour. This may still lighten a bit further before the colour change is complete. Jaimaca as an adult, with the silver colour change completed.
