These provide the best value when someone is looking for a display
piece. If you would like a replica of a lesser known vessel, or
if you need a model of a popular ship but in a size not commonly
available, it will likely have to be scratchbuilt.
The number of historic ships that can
be built from plans available through maritime museums and archives
is almost limitless. The cost for these models is invariably higher
and they are usually commissioned by museums, serious collectors
or those with a personal connection to the ship.
