Matrine Therriault-McLellan's Biography

Matrine's heritage is Ojibway/Cree. She was born in Northern Ontario. She is a mother of one daughter. She has lived in Winnipeg for most of her life. She has been employed as a secretary, researcher, community development worker, court and medical interpreter/translator, office manager, social worker for a mandated child welfare agency, case manager for the severely handicapped, and co-author.

"We, as Aboriginal people, need to take the responsibility for teaching our language and culture to our children so they will be proud of our heritage. I feel that it is important for our aboriginal children to know our own stories. When I was little the stories were always told to us in the winter. In those days we all knew our language and our culture. Today it is different, our languages and our culture are disappearing. We must adapt and adopt new ways and take every opportunity to tell our stories and read them to our children.”
