FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Lyme Disease is a New emerging disease due to Global Warming. It is a disease you can contract from a
Tick Bite, and is difficult to diagnose.
Cases of Lyme recorded before 1999 to Manitoba Health have not been recorded.
Cases that don’t fit STRINGENT SURVEILLANCE CASE PROTOCOL have not been recorded.
Research data about Lyme infected ticks collected by U of M and
Health Canada has not been Published
The support group has heard of many more cases than have been recorded.
Cases of Lyme and other tick-borne illnesses are increasing at an alarming rate in the US and surveillance has
demonstrated a high correlation of the incidence of disease with the abundance of ticks and their geographic
distribution. The prevention of Lyme disease is best accomplished by a combination of public awareness,
personal protection and environmental measures. Individuals in whom the diseaseis not diagnosed early and
who are not treated adequately can suffer long-term health complications."
As a Support Group we are encouraging Provincial and regional surveillance
efforts designed to provide greater understanding of the transmission of
Lyme disease and calls to provincial and federal funding for studies
pertaining to the development of improved testing and treatment of Lyme
and other tick-borne illness." among other points.
