Soundtrack - 3.5 Sticks of Butter

The musical score suited this movie quite well, but aside from the music in the bar that the main character and his companions enter none of the music is all that memorable.

Plot - 3 Sticks of Butter

This is a hard one to judge, From Dusk Till Dawn is geared more to the action fan, but for a "horror" movie I'd have to say it is generally plot heavy...but herein lies the question. What is the plot supposed to be? Was it supposed to be centered around the action aspect of the movie or the horror? The thief and psycho or the vampires? These two genres are merged together with much more skill than in the movie Octopus so neither aspect seems one hundred percent out of place. This is because both ideas had close to the same amount of screen time. I preferred the thief and psychopath idea to the vampires, however it did make for an entertaining end.

Action - 4 Sticks of Butter

Like I said this movie caters to the action lover. From explosions and hostages to vampires and holy water, this movie is an action lovers dream. I'm usually not fond of the "classic" action movie, but From Dusk Till Dawn adds humour and intriguing characters to the mix to make this movie one that even the most staunch opponents of action flicks will be able to enjoy. However if you are looking for the average horror movie action you'll have to wait until the movie is about half over. So if you're looking for mind numbing horror action you might be disappointed.

Effects - 2.5 Sticks of Butter

Filled with a wide selection of visual effects one would imagine a higher rating in this category. The explosions were large and there was a fair amount of blood all of this fairly believable. The vampire design was rather imaginative, but this film's biggest problem came from the effects.

My first problem with the vampires was the fact that they appeared very reptilian - which is not how they are usually portrayed, this could be considered ingenious or inaccurate depending on the viewer. While it was interesting to see a new spin on the vampire, it could be hard to swallow for some hard core vampire fans. All in all a hard core fan might be able to see passed this, however, the fact that not all of the vampires had this basic reptilian look is something that should not have been overlooked, and thus the score of 3.5 has been cut to 2.5 not on account of bad effects or originality, but because of inconsistency.

Characters - 3 Sticks of Butter

From Dusk Till Dawn sports a charming group of misfits. All well cast with strong interpersonal interaction, and no out of place humour. The language is quite colourful, but well suited for the characters and helps enhance their personalities rather than take away from the viewing experience.

Overall Impressions - 3 Sticks of Butter

A good way to spend an evening From Dusk Till Dawn will generally appeal to most people, as there is a little something for everyone. The fact that there is genre overlap may turn some purist off from this film. No aspect of the movie seemed to be obviously missing, with the exception of the glaringly obvious inconsistencies with the vampires.
