Soundtrack - 3 Sticks of Butter

The soundtrack for Believe was well suited for the film, it helped add an element of suspense. While not a soundtrack that will remain in ones head long after the movie ends it blends well.

Plot - 3.5 Sticks of Butter

The plot could have been taken directly from one of R.L. Stines novels, and while the story was not all that frightening it was entertaining. The movie also adds a touch of romance between the two leading roles, the innocence of their relationship was quite refreshing considering the content of most movies these days.

Action - 3 Sticks of Butter

While this movie was not wrought with action there were enough suspenseful scenes to keep the viewer interested. None of the action was over the top or completely unbelievable which I enjoyed.

Effects - 3.5 Sticks of Butter

Now the effects I enjoyed. The main character of this movie (Ben Stiles) is somewhat of a special effects expert and we see most of the fancy special effects coming from this character. Slightly mischievous Ben uses his talents to scare other kids, which is what lands him in the haunting situation he finds himself in. While I was impressed with what they did with this characters special effects I was not too thrilled with the rest. The ghost in Believe could have been more believable, but it was not an abomination either so I have not docked too much butter from the rating.

Characters - 3 Sticks of Butter

There was good chemistry between each character in this movie and at no time did I find any of them overbearing or annoying. The dialog seemed eased and genuine, and there were no obviously bad lines in the film. It was also good to see Andrea Martin make a cameo appearance - one of Canada's biggest stars. The only problem I did have was with Ben Stiles and the fact that he seemed to be trying to catch flies throughout the entire movie, that boy should learn to close his mouth from time to time.

Overall Impressions - 4 Sticks of Butter

This was a very cute horror flick. Usually I wouldn't associate the word cute with a horror film, however, Believe felt so much like a cross between Pulse and Goosebumps that there is no other way to describe it. This is a movie that has not received much attention, but being a Canadian film I suppose that is not out of the ordinary. If you are looking for a movie that will scare the pants off you I wouldn't recommend Believe, but if you're looking for a horror movie that stays true to it's rating and an intriguing plot you should see this movie.
