The History of Veselka...

It began with a dream of one man, David Katcsma, an Elementary School Teacher from Gilbert Plains, Founder of the Teulon Ukrainian Dance Club in the fall of 1974.

They began with very little, but the cooperative spirit, enthusiasm and dedication of many people working together made the Club a success. The main objective of the Club was to provide the opportunity for any member of the public to learn and appreciate the Art of Ukrainian Dance, Ukrainian Culture and Heritage. Thirty years later, the objective of the Club remains the same...

"You don't have to be Ukrainian

to enjoy & participate in the dance & culture."

The Dance Club is run on a voluntary basis by an Executive Committee that is elected each year. Membership is from the Interlake area of Manitoba.Parents, instructors and students currently meet on Monday evenings in Teulon.  Many a friendship has been founded from the weekly dance classes, and various outings the Club has pursued over the years. Veselka has become known as the Club that travels, with dancers achieving medal winning success at competitions in Saskatchewan, Alberta, as well as in Manitoba.

The Club's first concert was held May 30, 1975 with a cook book being published the same year. The Veselka Ukrainian Festival began in the Club's 15th year (1989) as a vision of club member Beverley Shymko. The current three day event includes amateur dance competitions, workshops, folk arts & crafts promoting Ukrainian culture and great Ukrainian Music, Dance and Food.

The Veselka Ukrainian Festival has been recommended by Travel Manitoba as one of the top ten "Must See" events in the Province of Manitoba. Our Festival is run by volunteer members and former members of the Veselka Ukrainian Dance Club, a huge undertaking involving countless hours of planning and preparation.

As Veselka's Festival has reached its 20th year and the dance club its 34th season, we, the current membership,

"Thank All" including former members, parents, instructors, babas and geegees for your continued support for our children, "Our Dancers" over the past 34 years!

Also a very special "Thanks" to David Katcsma, our Founder, for without his vision and dream, we would not be celebrating this 34th Anniversary....

Thanks David!
