Innovative approach to libraries

Ever since the early days, the OCLF has set out to promote the joy of reading and the sustainability of library structures and materials in cost-effective ways. To meet this end, the OCLF has adopted the following principles:

  1. To provide a safe, clean and quiet environment.
  2. To oblige children to wash their hands before entering the library.
  3. To emphasize and teach careful book care.
  4. To supply books which are culturally relevant and meaningful and are entrusted to a designated and trained librarian.
  5. To offer free librarian training, start-up materials and on-going support to community libraries.
  6. To help those wishing to open a children’s library. Please see our publication: How to Set Up Community Libraries for Children (English PDF 52 Kb) or Comment établir une bibliothèque communautaire pour enfants (au français PDF 52 Kb) and to offer workshops to promote reading.

  7. To give free literacy classes to those who have not received formal schooling.
Download Literacy Guidelines (PDF 233Kb) and/or Suggestions for Literacy Instructors (PDF 227Kb).
  8. To encourage expression through music, cultural dancing and visual arts.
  9. To encourage, whenever and wherever possible, the joy of reading.

Literacy!

Literacy! Oh literacy!
How grateful am I to you.
You make me all so great,
to read and write,
to give account of my soul.
Wonderful literacy!
Take root in my life
and make me a useful instrument.
