Pitfall was a very popular game for Activision and had been around for a number of years, going way back to the Atari 2600 console. Because GameMaker was made by Activision, they decided to program it using GameMaker to demonstrate that GameMaker was indeed capable of creating fun, professional quality games. They even got David Crane, the original programmer of Pitfall, to create it with GameMaker.

As you can see, the graphics for the GameMaker Pitfall are actually superior to the official Activision Pitfall released a year before. The game is included with GameMaker, and you can look at and alter the code and the raw graphics. All and all a great demonstration.
