More of Fabian Del Priore's Creations (2 of 5)

This is the second wave of Fabian's games. According to the in-line code comments, these are from 1990 when Fabian was only 12 years old.

Title: unknown
Disk: 6A
File Name: 'knight'
Category: Movie
Genre: fantasy
Players: n/a
Date created: 1990
Completed? Yes

Webmaster Comments: In this little movie, a knight leads a (surprise!) dinosaur out on leash in front of a king. Then Count Chocula comes along and gets bit. At least, that's how the story looked to me without being able to make out the dialog. As you can see, the movie shows some decent visual composition and good choice of colors (there were only 16 after all).
Author Comments: *lol* Count Chocula, yer olde morning cereals it seems? ;) Well the knight leads a creature which he refers to as Dragon, although it really looks like a dinosaur, right. He brings the dragon before the king and his men, but the man in black with a pale-white face becomes envious and tells the king that he's gonna catch an even bigger dragon, so that the pink dragon here looks small compared to the other. This aggrevates the pink dragon, he's kicking away the knight and grasps Chocula ;) with his fangs. He appologizes to the dragon, "l-let me down, please, y-you are also very big, really. Don't hurt me". As soon as Chocula lands on the ground, head first, the men of the king are beginng to cheer in an awesome speed ;) (animation speed 32). *horaay* . Chocula says: "I will return to my king with a bigger Dragon as promised." and the King says "He's not going to find a bigger Dragon, is he?" and so on. This really could have been a long demo with an interesting story, but my inspiration lagged after finishing this demo. What a shame. :)

Title: unknown
Disk: 6A
File Name: 'flug'
Category:Movie
Genre: sci-fi
Players: n/a
Date created: 1990
Completed? Yes

Webmaster Comments: This little movie features some pretty good music. It starts with a nice animation of a ship rotating in 3D after takeoff. This is a pretty simple movie but it's a taste of amazing things to come.
Author Comments: Flug, or flight in English, as Brian described it already, was just done because I wanted to created a quite realistic looking 3D sprite rotation of the plane (or space ship, whatever). After that, my ideas and inspirations were gone, obviously. The music has some bits and parts of bomb jack which had Jean-Michel Jarre's Chants Magnetiques.

Title: Dragonfire
Disk: 6A
File Name: 'drgfir'
Category:Game
Genre: Arcade
Players:1
Date created:1990
Completed? Yes

Webmaster Comments:No, that's not an erroneous screenshot from an Atari 2600 game. It's a conversion of Dragonfire, a 1982 game by Imagic. As someone who tried cloning NES Zelda using Gamemaker, I sympathize with Fabians need to clone an existing game. Gamemaker was great because if you missed out on many early eighties games, you could always use GKGM to duplicate them for free! Dragonfire is a surprisingly exact duplication of the original. There are no sounds or music, but the levels appear complete and succeeding levels even change color appropriately.
Note: I just checked the Gamebase 64 database, and Imagic made a c64 port of Dragonfire with improved graphics. It kinda reminds me of another classic, Hunchback.

Author Comments: This was fun to program! I always loved the game on the Atari 2600, so just had to port it to Game Maker... GKGM in general was a good programming environment to port Atari 2600 games, have a look at Pitfall. :) There was no music or sound in the original game, and I never felt like making up some on my own. To port it, I took the original manual from Atari game, looked at the screenshots there, read what was necessary to create the game, and that's it.

Title: unknown
Disk: 6A
File Name: 'schath'
Category:Demo
Genre: experimental demo
Players: n/a
Date created: 1990
Completed? No

Webmaster Comments:This test game draws star field and has a dinosaur you can control. Every game shows a progression of the author. First, the programmer makes some simple tests and then goes on to create more advanced works. Fabians progression is the same.
Author Comments: Yep, I've just tested the joystick movement, adding points to the score and drawing a star field. Schath stands for the evil "S" word, sh*t ;)

Title: Introduction
Disk: 6A
File Name: 'vspann'
Category:Demo
Genre: Intro
Players: n/a
Date created: 1990
Completed? Yes

Webmaster Comments: It looks like Fabian took the GKGM intro (Balloons and Birds) and modified it. The program says, "Schneeweisschen und Rosenrot. Ein Theaterstueck von Barbara Schwindt 1978". I wonder what that means?
Author Comments: Hehe! It's a theatre play we've done in school 1990 which is based on a fairy-tale that is called "Snow White and Rose Red" written by Barbera Schwindt in 1978. Our teacher wanted some kind of introduction because he wanted to make some copies on VHS for all of the pupils in our class. Well, I offered to create something on my Computer with a certain program (GKGM ;) and that's the story behind it :) vspann means "Vorspann", "Intro" or "Introduction" in English. :)

Title: Super Pang
Disk: 6A
File Name: 's-p'
Category:Game
Genre: Space Invaders
Players:2
Date created:1990
Completed? No

Webmaster Comments:This two player game allows players to shoot at some bouncing red balls. It features some nice, brooding music. Like Asteroids, when you shoot a ball it divides into two smaller balls. This game appears incomplete since the second player is not activated.
Author Comments: Anyone remembers the arcade game Pang? This was an attempt at it, although the balls are not jumping on the ground but flying through the playfield and bouncing off the screen borders.. Unfinished, mainly due to lack of sprites (8 simultaneously was just way too few). The File Name s-p just abbreviates Super Pang.

Title: Shoot the Moko
Disk: 6A
File Name: 'game'
Category:Demo
Genre:Target shooting
Players:1
Date created:1990
Completed? No

Webmaster Comments:This is obviously just a test bed to try out some ideas. Intriguing title, though. It says in-code the author is 'Hilius the Dragon'. Ooooooooh!
Author Comments: Done by the same friend, just a test...

Title: Ping Pong 2
Disk: 6A
File Name: 'jhl'
Category:Game
Genre:Pong game
Players:2
Date created:1990
Completed? No

Webmaster Comments:This game and the next are attempts at expanding on the ever popular Pong-game genre. Keep this game in mind, because later in Fabians collection he delivers on the promise of making a unique Pong game. The in-code text says it was done by 'Hilius Soft'.
Author Comments: Done by a friend, never finished...

Title: Super-Ball-Table-Tennis
Disk: 6A
File Name: 'tablet'
Category:Game
Genre:Pong game
Players:2
Date created:1990
Completed? No

Webmaster Comments:Fabians first attempt at a Pong game (his name appears in the in-code text). The seed has been planted...
Author Comments: Ok, this one is very incomplete... you can only move player 1 and the ball is just moving from player 1 to player 2.

Note: I think the creations below on disk 2A and 2B are from 1990 because 2A also contains a non-working game titled 'dschub', which also appears on disk 11A, which is from 1990.

Title: unknown
Disk: 2A
File Name: 'space'
Category:Game
Genre: Space invaders type
Players:1
Date created:???
Completed? No?

Webmaster Comments: This is a simple Space Invaders type of game where aliens descend from the top of the screen and you decimate them. It seems unfinished.
Author Comments: This is the first of the two games I wrote for my birthday party to play with my friends.

Title: Shoot: The Mines Return
Disk: 1B
File Name: 'shooty'
Category:Game
Genre: Space Invaders type
Players:1
Date created:1990?
Completed? Yes

Webmaster Comments: This little game is very much like Gorf, a Bally-Midway classic from the arcades.

Author Comments: I actually wrote this little game for my birthday party and for my friends to play it... part 2.

Title: Dinosaur
Disk: 2B
File Name: 'dinosa'
Category:Game
Genre: fighting
Players:1
Date created:199?
Completed? No

Webmaster Comments: This unfinished game has some nice music and graphics. In a way, it reminds me of the great unfinished C64 game, The Time Crystal (anyone remember the amazing preview?). You can control the dinosaurs but there does not seem to be any gameplay.
Author Comments: A jump to label command which was set to get rid of bugs etc, directly jumps to the beginning of the second level, but it was never finished. Remove that jump to label command and you will be able to fight the second dinosaur in a street fighter style. 1 player mode only.
