Syvspring (Denmark)

A children's dance. Good to use when most of the participants are new to folk dancing. - There is a story behind this dance. It is about a Danish politician who couldn't make up his mind. This dance resembles his political career.

Formation

All join hands in a circle round the room, no partners needed.

Instructions

This dance is cumulative, i.e. each verse goes through the whole dance and then adds a bit. e.g for verse 4 you will do the chorus, verse1, verse 2, verse 3 and verse 4.

Chorus:

7 walking steps to your left. 7 walking steps to your right. 7 skipping steps to your left. 7 skipping steps to your right.

Verses:

  1. Put your right heel on the floor in front of you, with your toes raised and put it back to place.
  2. Put your leftt heel on the floor in front of you, with your toes raised and put it back to place.
  3. Go down on your right knee.
  4. Go down on both knees.
  5. Let go of the hand of the person on your right. Put your left knuckle on your chin and let your right elbow touch the floor.
  6. Let go of the hand of the person on your left. Put your left knuckle on your chin and let your left elbow touch the floor.
  7. Let your forehead touch the floor.
  8. Do a head over heels.

When teaching the dance do not tell the people what is going to happen. Just show them the chorus and the first verse.
