Lapida
Formation
A cumulative dance I learnt at Cambridge University in England. Circle
round the room, joined hands, no partners needed.
Instructions
Each verse of the dance consists of 4 grapevine steps in a clockwise
direction starting on the right foot. You sing the song ," I can do the
Lapida, lapida, lapida. I can do the Lapida, lapida, lapi lapida, hey!".
- The leader says, "Can you do the Lapida?" and everyone replies, "yes".
He then says "With joined hands?" and everyone replies "yes", and then
join hands. Everyone does 4 grapevine steps with hands joined and singing
the song at the same time.
- The leader says, "So you can you do the Lapida with joined hands?"
and everyone replies, "yes" and they clasp hands with the people on
either side of them. He then says "With hands on heads?" and everyone
replies "yes". Everyone then places their hands on the heads of the
people on either side of them and do 4 grapevine steps and sing the
song at the same time.
- The leader says, "So you can you do the Lapida with joined hands?"
and everyone replies, "yes" and they clasp hands with the people on
either side of them. He then says "With hands on heads?" and everyone
replies "yes" and thy put their hands on the heads of the people on
either side of them. He then says "With hands on shoulders?" and everyone
replies "yes" and they put their hands round the shoulders of the people
on either side of them and then do 4 grapevine steps and sing the song
at the same time.
The dance continues in a cumulative way ......
- With hands round waists.
- With hands on knees.
- With hands on ankles.
- Finally, the leader having said and done all that is needed to be
said and done as if there were going to be a next verse, now says, "You
can do the lapida!"
