THOT FOR THE WEEK
![]()
In the twentieth chapter of Matthew we read the mother of Zebedee's sons
came to Jesus with her sons and, kneeling down, asked a favor of him.
The favor? For her sons to sit on Jesus's right and left in his kingdom.
Jesus turned the whole concept of me first around with this request. He
told the disciples to be first, one must become a servant. One who attends
or waits upon an other is the reference. To serve without expecting glory
or reward is how one becomes great in the kingdom of God. Jesus set the
perfect example in his service to us by his death on the cross, giving
himself over completely.
Not much has changed in the attitudes of people today. It is a me first,
dog eat dog world. We strive to be on top and will get there at any cost.
However, Jesus turns this whole concept inside out, serving is not a menial
task, Jesus holds it in high regard, to the point of giving his life as a
ransom for many. A servants heart not looking for reward or gain finds it
nonetheless in the kingdom of God.
